FPL Gameweek 2 Differentials

The Defender Differential – Oleksandr Zinchenko – £5.5m, 1.6% owned

Last season Manchester City kept more clean sheets than any other team with 19 or in 50% of all their Premier League matches.

The Manchester City defenders were amongst some of the highest scoring per start out of any defenders in the league but the issue arises when trying to predict which of the defenders will be starting each and every Gameweek.

However, recently Pep Guardiola has praised Zinchenko including giving the left back in the start in the 2020/21 Champions League final. With Benjamin Mendy not performing to the desired level from a defensive point of view, Zinchenko should now be the first choice left back with Cancelo and Walker rotating on the right hand side.

On top of this, Zinchenko had the second highest expected points per 90 minutes out of any of the Manchester City defenders only behind Cancelo (£6.0m).

However, Cancelo started Gameweek 1 whilst Zinchenko and Walker were rested due to a late return to pre season training which increases the likelihood of these two options starting in Gameweek 2 at home against Norwich which is has the highest probability of a clean sheet out of the next five fixtures for Manchester City with 0.6.

On top of this, the Hub Fixture Ticker ranks Manchester City joint second for the best defensive fixtures over the next five Gameweeks. However, on top of this, Manchester City are ranked first for the most predicted clean sheets over the next five Gameweeks with 2.3 clean sheets.

These fixtures for Manchester City are Norwich, Arsenal and Southampton at home with potentially more difficult away matches against Leicester and Chelsea.

Given that Manchester City kept the most clean sheets last season and Zinchenko has shown himself to be the best left back at Manchester City with Benjamin Mendy not performing well recently, £5.5m could allow Zinchenko to be a slightly more affordable Manchester City option whilst also being a good differential option for the upcoming five fixtures.

The Midfielder Differential – Adama Traore £6.0m, 1.1% owned

Gameweek 1 saw a difficult start to the season for Wolves with Leicester away, a fixture that ranked as the fourth most difficult fixture in Gameweek 1 for the attacking team.

Wolves did not score in this game but did amass an expected goals total of 1.1. The largest contributor to this was Adama Traore who had an expected goals total of 0.59, over half of the Wolves expected goals total for Gameweek 1.

This was driven by Traore having six shots in Gameweek 1, not only was this the highest in the Wolves team but also the joint highest out of any player in the Premier League in Gameweek 1 with Jamie Vardy.

This was partly driven by a slightly new more central and attacking role for Traore that gave the Spanish winger more of an opportunity to use his pace and get in behind the opposition defence.

On top of this, Adama Traore (£6.0m) was the biggest under performing player in Gameweek 1 with just two points despite having 6.6 expected points.

On top of the new, more central and attacking role that Traore showed in Gameweek 1, the Hub Fixture Ticker ranks Wolves second for the best attacking fixtures over the next five Gameweeks only behind Brighton.

These fixtures for Wolves are Tottenham, Manchester United and Brentford at home with Watford and Southampton away.

This combination of attacking threat and good upcoming fixtures could offer Adama Traore as a good differential at just £6.0m over more popular and  highly owned midfielders such as Benrahma (£6.1m), Mason Greenwood (£7.5m) or Raphinha (£6.5m).

The Forward Differential – Neal Maupay – £6.5m, 2.7% owned

The Hub Fixture Ticker ranks Brighton first for the best next five fixtures out of any team in the league from an attacking point of view. These fixtures include Watford, Everton and Leicester at home with Brentford and Crystal Palace away.

This includes two newly promoted teams whilst the three Premier League teams  in Everton, Leicester and Crystal Palace kept just 31 clean sheets combined or 0.27 per match.

Out of the Brighton players it is striker and Gameweek 1 goalscorer in Maupay that stands out as the main goal threat in the Brighton team. Last season Maupay had the highest expected goals per start of any Brighton player with 0.4 which was 25% higher than Connolly and Welbeck both in second place with 0.29.

This was driven in by the amount of shots shots and quality of shots that the French forward was taking as Maupay was first for shots, shots inside the box and big chances per start.

This continued into Gameweek 1 with Maupay having four shots inside the box, two on target and the highest expected goals of any Brighton player with 0.69.

On top of this, Maupay is likely to continue taking penalties for Brighton this season which gives the French forward another route to points increasing the appeal and potential as a good differential.

This all shows that given the good run of fixtures Brighton have for the next five Gameweeks, Maupay could offer a good differential over the more highly owned forwards in Ivan Toney (£6.5m), Danny Ings (£7.5m) or Patrick Bamford (£8.0m) despite being cheaper than most other popular forward options.
