Who are the Best FPL Defenders For Gameweek 13?
Reece James (£6.1m) – Chelsea
Fixture: Manchester United (H)
Reece James has registered an attacking return in all five of his starts this season. He has four goals and four assists and is the third highest scoring defender in the game. He has 8 Shots in the Box with an xG of 1.60 and has created 17 Chances with an xA of 2.12 (3rd amongst defenders).
There is no telling how many attacking returns he could get this season if he carries on starting regularly. Despite only five starts this season, his attacking stats are up there with the likes of Joao Cancelo and Alexander-Arnold. He almost has as many points, too.
Chelsea play Manchester United in Gameweek 13. With the state United are in at the moment, this is a good fixture for Thomas Tuchel’s men. The bookies agree as they have the Blues as the second favourites to keep a clean sheet (45%).
Also, Chelsea’s defence has been phenomenal this season at both ends of the pitch. They have only conceded four goals (1st), 71 Shots in the Box (2nd) and an xGC of 13.4 (3rd). They have also kept eight clean sheets (1st). Six different defenders have scored for them this season and James is their top scorer.
Although United have had no problems scoring goals this season, they have just lost their manager. That may affect them negatively and Chelsea’s defensive numbers are just too good to ignore.
James has been really attacking this season which is evident in his stats and he really does look like getting attacking returns in every game.
Furthermore, our Points Prediction Tool ranks him at 51% to return anytime in Gameweek 13.
Trent Alexander Arnold (£7.7m) – Liverpool
Fixture: Southampton (H)
The England right-back looks on course for another fantastic season for Liverpool. After last week’s two assists he now has a total of one goal and six assists and is the joint highest scoring defender.
He has created 34 Chances (2nd), 8 Big Chances (1st) with an xA of 4.57 (2nd). Only teammate Mohamed Salah has a higher xA than Alexander-Arnold which is quite unbelievable for a defender.
Liverpool host Southampton in Gameweek 13 which should be another clean sheet for the Reds. Their defensive stats have been amongst the best in the league. They have conceded 11 goals (3rd) with 84 Shots in the Box (4th), 40 Shots on Target (2nd) and an xGC of 13.2 (2nd).
And Southampton haven’t exactly been one of the best going forward either. They've only racked up 11 goals (19th) and an xG of 14.6 (17th).
With the England international's superb attacking stats and Liverpool’s strong defence, he threatens for attacking and defensive returns in most games. He's also being on free-kicks and corners. He's just too good of an asset to go without.
Our Points Prediction Tool again has him as the highest predicted scoring (6.3) defender for Gameweek 13 and also has him top for anytime returns (72%) amongst all players.
Joao Cancelo (£6.4m) – Manchester City
Fixture: West Ham United (H)
Joao Cancelo sits as the joint top-scoring defender with Alexander-Arnold. He has also been fantastic going forward this season and has been one of the most attacking players in the league.
The Portuguese has the most final third passes (354) from all players and has the highest xG (2.14) amongst defenders. He has also created 12 Chances with an xA 2.13 (2nd amongst defenders).
With so much attacking threat and playing for the strongest defence in the league, Cancelo is a must-have player in my opinion.
Manchester City play West Ham United in Gameweek 13. The Hammers have been good going forward with 23 goals (4th) and an xG of 20.4 (4th).
However, City’s defensive stats are super-elite and no team comes close to them. They have conceded six goals (2nd), 51 Shots in the Box (1st), 21 Shots on Target (1st) and an xGC of 13.2 (1st).
Man City are also the favourites to keep a clean sheet in Gameweek 13 (48%) according to the bookmakers and are also favourites to score 2.5+ goals (49%). Again, this is great news for Cancelo’s chances of returns at both ends of the pitch.
Our Points Prediction Tool ranks him as the second-highest predicted scoring defender (5.8 points) for Gameweek 13 and he is also at 69% for anytime returns.
Sergio Reguilón (£5.1m) – Spurs
Fixture: Burnley (a)
Sergio Reguilon grabbed his first goal of the season last gameweek. As expected, the full-backs for Spurs have been a lot more attacking and this has been evident with Reguilon and Emerson’s positions in the last two games.
Spurs play Burnley in Gameweek 13 and this game should present another opportunity for attacking and defensive returns for the Spaniard.
The Clarets have conceded 20 goals (18th) with an xGC of 21.5 (18th). And they have also only scored 14 goals (16th) with an xG of 15.2 (14th).
Reguilón now has one goal and two assists for the season and I can see him adding plenty to his attacking returns. He does have the best attacking stats amongst the Spurs defenders. Not only do they have a good fixture this week, but their following two of Brentford (H) and Norwich (H) are as good as they come.
Conte’s formations against Everton and Leeds showed that he will continue to use Regulion as a marauding full-back and with the fixtures coming up, this is his best chance for both attacking and defensive returns.
Rayan Ait-Nouri (£4.3m) – Wolves
Fixture: Norwich (a)
Rayan Ait Nouri has been a great value asset over the last few games. He seems to have ousted Marcal and that left wing-back spot looks to be his to lose now.
He only got his first start in Gameweek 9 and has started every game since, picking up one assist and two clean sheets. He has also accumulated an xG of 0.19 and xA of 0.65.
Wolves travel to Carrow Road in Gameweek 13 to take on Norwich. Although the Canaries have won back-to-back games, they still have the worst attack in the league. They have only scored seven goals (20th) with 56 Shots in the Box (20th), 33 Shots on Target (20th) and an xG of 10.7 (20th).
Wolves have been quite solid at the back and been unfortunate not to have kept more than three clean sheets, to be honest. They have only conceded 11 goals (3rd), 89 Shots in the Box (5th), 50 Shots on Target (6th) and an xGC of 15.2 (5th). They are in the top five defences in the league and will keep clean sheets at a higher rate going forward.
The bookmakers also have them as fourth favourites to keep a clean sheet (38%) this week.
Ait Nouri is an attacking player and has already shown this during his time at Wolves. He has also got seven assists in a total of 54 games he played sporadically over his career in Ligue 1 and the Premier League. An added bonus is he is quite a few corners and free-kicks for Wolves too.
As long as he starts regularly he will pick up attacking and defensive points and he is currently at a bargain price of £4.3m also.
