Who are the Best FPL Defenders For Gameweek 5?
Reece James (£5.6m) – Chelsea
Fixture: Spurs (a)
Chelsea have now kept three clean sheets in four games (1st), conceding only one goal in the process. This came against Liverpool when they were down to 10-men and it was from a penalty.
The Blues come up against Spurs in Gameweek 5 which looks like a tough game on paper. However, their London rivals haven’t been at the races this season attacking wise, only scoring only three goals (18th).
They have also only managed 17 Shots on Target (13th), 22 Shots in the Box (19th), 3 Big Chances (19th) and an xG of 4.5 (13th).
Reece James is their best defensive option as he is the attacking defender who is the most nailed. He has already managed one goal and two assists in three starts with an xG of 0.54 and an xA of 0.68.
Also, last season he created 42 Chances, 4 Big Chances with an xA of 3.78. The English fullback also registered 15 Shots in the Box with an xG of 2.16.
His attacking prowess, mixed with Chelsea’s resolute defence makes him an absolute gem of an FPL asset. James' £5.6m price will undoubtedly prove to be fantastic value.
Despite an away game to Spurs, the bookmakers rank Chelsea as the fourth favourites to keep a clean sheet (43%). In all honesty, this Chelsea team can keep any side quiet.
Trent Alexander Arnold (£7.5m) – Liverpool
Fixture: Crystal Palace (H)
The Liverpool right-back registered his second double-digit haul of the season last Gameweek. He now has two assists, three clean sheets and sits as the highest scoring defender in the game.
Alexander-Arnold has managed an impressive 20 Chances Created (1st), 4 Big Chances Created (1st) and an xA of 2.37 (1st). He is looking like more of a must-have with each passing Gameweek.
Liverpool welcome Crystal Palace to Anfield in Gameweek 5. This looks like another game in which Trent can benefit both offensively and defensively.
The Reds are the second favourites to both keep a clean sheet this week at 55%. The same goes with scoring 2.5+ goals (49%). Our Fixture Ticker agrees and also ranks them as the second favorites to keep a shut out.
Palace haven’t been the best team attacking wise this season. They have only managed 9 Shots on Target (19th), 27 Shots in the Box (15th) and an xG of 4.7 (11th).
It's also important to note that three of their five goals came against 10-man Spurs in Gameweek 4.
Trent has been tremendous for his owners so far. This looks like another fixture in which he can get plenty of FPL returns. He tops the table for chance creation among all players and is also on corners and direct free-kicks.
Our Points Prediction Tool ranks him as the highest predicted scoring defender (6.6 points) and third highest player overall. He is also at 75% for anytime returns which is huge.
Joao Cancelo (£6.0m) – Manchester City
Fixture: Southampton (H)
Joao Cancelo had a good season last campaign. He notched two goals and four assists with 35 Shots, 11 Shots in Target, 15 Shots in the Box. The Portuguese international also created 45 Chances and 9 Big Chances in only 27 starts.
He has started this season off well too with three clean sheets an assist in four games. He has managed 2 Shots in the Box with an xG of 0.53. Cancelo also created 4 Chances and 1 Big Chance with an xA of 0.64.
Manchester City come up against Southampton in Gameweek 5 which is a fixture in which the versatile fullback will have chances at both ends of the pitch.
Pep Guardiola's side are the favourites to keep a clean sheet this week (58%) according to the bookmakers. They're also the favoruites to score 2.5+ goals (53%).
Cancelo is the most attacking defender in that City backline. The fact he has played 90 minutes in all four games so far is also reassuring.
The Citizens have only conceded 13 Shots in the Box (1st), 3 Shots on Target (1st), 2 Big Chances (2nd) and an xGC of 1.5 (1st). Just like last season, they are still the best defensive team in the league.
Furthermore, our Points Prediction Tool has Joao as the 6th highest scoring defender (5.0) this week. It also has him at 74% for anytime returns (2nd overall).
Kieran Tierney (£4.9m) – Arsenal
Fixture: Burnley (a)
The ex-Celtic left-back has had a bit of stop-start time with Arsenal due to niggling injuries. He is an attacking defender and picked up one goal and four assists last season in only 26 starts.
Although he hasn’t had any attacking returns so far this season, his stats show that it won't be for much longer. The Scotsman has already created 9 Chances (1st among Arsenal players), providing 21 crosses with an xG 0.44.
Arsenal play Burnley (a) in Gameweek 5. It’s another good chance for the Gunners to keep a clean sheet. They are the fifth favourites to not concede according to the bookmakers (38%). With Tierney, you also have the attacking threat.
Arsenal’s defensive numbers don’t look encouraging, conceding 13 Big Chances (19th) with an xGC of 8.1 (18th). However, they did come up against Chelsea (H) and Manchester City (a) - a game in which they were down to 10-men for the majority.
Therefore, the stats will look worse than they are in reality. Against Brentford, they had an xGC of 1.2 and versus Norwich it was even better at 0.4. I would expect them to have similar numbers against Burnley.
Nélson Semedo (£4.9m) – Wolves
Fixture: Brentford (H)
Wolves kept their first clean sheet of the season last Gameweek and it was a long time coming. They have actually been posting very impressive defensive stats.
In the first four games, Bruno Lage's men have only conceded 22 Shots in the Box (3rd), 3 Big Chances (3rd) and a non-penalty xG of 0.8 (1st).
They come up against Brentford (H) in Gameweek 5 which gives them a good chance for another shut out. Wolves are third favourites this Gameweek to keep a clean sheet (50%) according to the bookmakers.
Nelson Semedo looks a very promising right back with a lot of attacking returns in him. Since his first game in Gameweek 2, he is top for penalty area touches (11), Big Chances (2) and also second for xG (0.80) among defenders.
We also know that he has a good attacking record with 11 goals and 33 assists in 291 games over his career.
For Gameweek 5, the Portuguese right-back is at 46% for anytime returns. Our Fixture Ticker actually ranks Wolves as having the joint second best fixture this week for defence.
Semedo is very attacking down that right side as evidenced from his heat map in the image below.
