Who are the Best FPL Defenders For Gameweek 8?
Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) – Liverpool
Fixture: Watford (a)
In the last three seasons, Andrew Robertson has registered three goals and 32 assists for Liverpool.
He looks a great option this week as Liverpool take on Watford. With Trent Alexender-Arnold a doubt for this game, Robertson is a nailed on safe pick.
Liverpool have kept four clean sheets (2nd) so far with 55 Shots in the Box conceded (8th), 10 Big Chances (4th) and an xGC of 8.1 (6th).
Their defence have been good and seems to be much more stable now with the return of Virgil van Dijk (£6.6m).
Gameweek 8 opponents Watford have struggled to score against tougher opposition this season. The Hornets have blanked in games against Leeds United, Brighton, Spurs and Wolves. They also only recorded an xG of only 7.3 (18th).
Looking at the numbers, this looks like a good fixture for the Reds to keep another clean sheet in.
They are the third favourites to keep a clean sheet this week at 48% and also the second favourites to score 2.5+ goals (49%).
The Scottish left-back can reap the rewards in both defence and attack in Gameweek 8.
Andy Robertson actually ranks second this week for predicted points (5.1) amongst defenders. This is according to our Points Prediction Tool.
He is also ranked at 59% for anytime returns.
Shane Duffy (£4.3m) – Brighton
Fixture: Norwich (a)
Brighton have kept three clean sheets in their first seven games.
They have conceded 43 Shots in the Box (4th), 18 Shots on Target (2nd) and an xGC of 7.2 (2nd). Only Manchester City surpass them for xGC so their defence offers great value this season.
Graham Potter's men come up against Norwich (a) in Gameweek 8. The Canaries have been the worst side in the league both defensively and going forward.
They have only managed to score two goals (20th), with 36 Shots in the Box (20th), 17 Shots on Target and an xG of 6.1 (20th). Norwich are rock bottom of every important attacking metric.
Shane Duffy has been phenomenal value this season with a starting price of only £4.0m. As well as his three clean sheets, he has a goal and an assist to his name and has been very attacking also.
The Republic of Ireland international registered the most Shots in the Box (13) and Shots on Target (4) amongst defenders with an xG of 0.86 (7th).
The Seagulls are at 38 % to keep clean sheet this week (4th) and will be strong favourites for this one.
Norwich struggle to score goals and Brighton’s defensive numbers are among the best in the league.
Joao Cancelo (£6.2m) – Manchester City
Fixture: Burnley (H)
Joao Cancelo is currently the highest scoring defender in the game. He has played 90 minutes in every game so far, picking up five clean sheets, and two assists.
The versatile fullback has created 8 Chances with an xA of 0.82. Cancelo has the most final third passes (188) from all defenders.
Manchester City host Burnley at the Etihad in Gameweek 8. Unsurprisingly, this looks like a banker for a clean sheet for the Citizens.
They have been by far the best defence in the league thus far, conceding only 26 Shots in the Box (1st), 9 Shots on Target (1st) and an xGC of 3.8 (1st).
To put it into context, Brighton have the second best xGC at 7.2. The gulf is massive.
Burnley haven’t been too impressive going forward either. They have scored five goals (19th) with an xG of 8.1 (15th).
Furthermore, City are the clear favourites to keep a clean sheet in Gameweek 8 (62%) according to the bookmakers.
They are also the favourites to score 2.5+ goals (51%).
With Cancelo being the most attacking defender for City, this is another fixture where the Portuguese can pick up returns at both ends of the pitch.
Our Points Prediction Tool has Cancelo as the highest scoring defender this week (5.2 points). He is also first for anytime returns, with a massive 76%.
Kieran Tierney (£4.9m) – Arsenal
Fixture: Crystal Palace (H)
The Arsenal left-back has also started every game this season. He has picked up three clean sheets and has been a bit unfortunate not to have picked up any attacking returns.
Kieran Tierney has Created 9 Chances with an xA of 0.45. He will get attacking returns throughout the season and he should justify his £5.0m starting price too.
Arsenal play Crystal Palace (H) in Gameweek 8 and this looks another good fixture for the Gunners to keep a clean sheet in.
They had a really tough start to the season; playing Chelsea and Manchester City in their opening three games.
However, since Gameweek 4 when their fixtures picked up, they have the second best xGC (2.9) in the league. This is only behind Manchester City.
They are also third favourites to keep a clean sheet this week according to the bookmakers (48%).
Arsenal’s defensive numbers against the weaker teams have been really good. Mikel Arteta's team were also in the top four for best defence overall last season too.
I think this game against Crystal Palace is a very favourable one for them. Our Fixture Ticker actually has them down as the best for defence in Gameweek 8.
Ben Chilwell (£5.6m) – Chelsea
Fixture: Brentford (a)
Ben Chilwell hasn’t had the start to the season he had hoped for.
He didn’t start the first few games due to returning late from the Euros and was then ousted by Marco Alonso due to the Spaniard's good performances.
However, it was only a matter of time before Chilwell regained his starting spot.
This happened last Gameweek in which he incidentally scored. And he also is now at a very attractive price of £5.6m after falling by £0.4m.
Chilwell is Chelsea’s most attacking defender and when he is starting, he is the best option FPL wise.
In only 27 starts last season, the left-back registered three goals and six assists with 27 Shots, 10 Shots on Target, 22 Shots in the Box and four Big Chances while creating 30 Chances and two Big Chances.
The Blues were the second best team in the league defensively last season and had the second least Big Chances conceded (43) as well as Shots in the Box (195).
They have already kept four clean sheets this season despite a tough schedule where they have played Arsenal (a), Liverpool (a), Spurs (a) and Manchester City (H).
Thomas Tuchel's side are the second favourites to keep a clean sheet (52%) in Gameweek 8 against Brentford (a).
Despite the Bees having a great season so far, Chelsea should prove to be too strong for them.
