Gameweek 10 results
We had a total of four clean sheets in GW10. Man City were top at 50% and kept out Aston Villa. They were quite lucky not to concede though with five shots on target conceded and an ‘expected goals conceded’ (xGC) of 1.55. McGinn came very close twice, once hitting the post and then forcing a good save from Ederson. The result of the week though was Leicester City's 9-0 thumping of Southampton. Quite possibly the most pathetic performance I have ever witnessed despite them being down to 10 men. They conceded 15 ‘shots in the box’ (SitBC) and 8 ‘big chances’ (BC), while their xGC was 5.25. The only other teams to keep a clean sheet were Watford and Bournemouth who played out a 0-0 draw. If there was any doubt about a premium defence then I think it’s truly dead in the water now.
Pep Roulette struck again for top of the table Sergio Aguero who was benched for the second league game in a row. This time though he made a 14 minute cameo rewarding his captainer’s (including me) with a grand total of two points. Jesus started alongside Sterling who notched a goal early in the second half. Overall a much better week than last with a few familiar names like Salah, Vardy, Rashford, Martial, and Kane all getting on the scoresheet.

Gameweek 11 Clean sheets
Manchester City are again favourites to keep a clean sheet coming in at 55%. Not surprising as they play Southampton who are coming off conceding 12 goals in their last two games. For the second week running there is quite a gulf between first and second. Liverpool do have an ‘easy’ fixture on paper but Aston Villa are on a decent run of form at the moment, winning three of their last five league games, and the only defeat in that time has come to champions Manchester City. They have also scored nine goals in that time so they aren’t shy of goal and every chance they can score against Liverpool who have only kept two clean sheets thus far in the league.
Only Manchester City (5) have kept more clean sheets than Sheffield United this season (4). If I told you this would be the case after 10 GW’s you would have laughed in my face. It’s just the kind of season it’s been so I am not holding out any hope for any of my defenders but I will keep playing the odds. It’s the logical thing to do, right?
One match which caught my eye this week is Everton vs Spurs. Believe it or not, Spurs have one of the worst defensive stats in the league this season. They have conceded the second most SoT (65), third highest SitBC (102) and shots overall (157). Although Everton haven’t been the best themselves this season they have still managed to keep three clean sheets despite conceding 16 goals. Defensively their stats are actually quite good – conceded fourth least SitB (59), seventh least SoT (38), and fifth least BC (17), so for those who have still have Digne or any Everton defenders you might be in for a surprise.
