Essential Burnley FPL Stats | Attacking Numbers
Burnley at the end of the 2020/21 season was not a Burnley I’ve ever seen.
I don’t know if they will resort to the defensive solidity that earned them a cursed berth in the Europa League, or the Burncelona we saw at the end of last season.
Their stats are equally confusing. Burnley attempted the 6th most crosses (772) and had the 5th lowest successful cross completion (19.7%).
Interestingly, the Clarets are one of eight teams whose pass percentage improved in the final third. Of those eight, they had the 2nd best improvement (4.4%).
They had the most unsuccessful passes last season and, unsurprisingly, the fewest assists of non-relegated teams (20). To me, these numbers are quite the indychement (if you’ll forgive the dad joke).
Essential Burnley FPL Stats | Defensive Numbers
It will come as no surprise that Burnley had the most blocked shots last season (180). That’s 20 more than the next most. It’s evident in the eye test and confirmed by the stats.
The effect of blocked shots is interesting when looking at its effect on expected goals allowed (xGA). Burnley had an xGA of 55.56 last season. Their xG on Target Allowed (xGoTA) was only 49.3.
That means Burnley got in the way and changed play enough to take away 6.26 xG (xGoTC 49.3 – xGC 55.56) over the course of the season when a shot was on target.
This may not seem like much, but I find it to be partially indicative of defensive performance and if expectations of the opposition should be tempered.
The problem for Burnley, however, is the number of chances they conceded last season. Burnley conceded more chances than any other team including the relegated teams (454). This is how most of them occurred:
- 5th most headed goal attempts conceded (91)
- 3rd most chances conceded from the right side (141)
- 2nd most chances conceded from the center (167)
- most chances conceded from the left (146).
All this being said, a cold night at Turf Moor without fans is not the same as with the fans.
We will have to wait and see if their defence is awakened by the fans, but they present a nice matchup for any attack that relies on number of opportunities rather than the precision of a few opportunities.
