Essential West Ham FPL Stats | Attacking Numbers

West Ham’s attacking stats interestingly revolve around their 775 crosses, which was good for 4th most in the division.

The crosses weren’t in vain either. The Hammers managed the 3rd highest cross completion (23.9%), the most headed shots (107) and the most headed goals (15).

Moyes employed a counter-attack and cross style of play and has the personnel to do it well. They created the 5th most chances from counter-attacks (21) and boasted the 4th most assists (46).

Their ability to send perfect passes, and Jesse Lingard’s (£7.0m) wonder goals, are largely responsible for an expected assists (xA) of just 31.92. The difference of 14.08 may not be sustainable, but “overproduction” certainly can be.

Conflictingly, West Ham’s expected goals on target was 6.27 less than their expected goals. Despite those low xG Lingard goals, overall, they still took 6.27 xG away when shooting on target. I’m not sure what to do with that one.

Lingard’s impressive finishing contributed to West Ham’s low xA.

Essential West Ham FPL Stats | Defensive Numbers

I was surprised at how little stood out regarding West Ham’s defence.

Their stats are mostly unremarkable, but not bad either. They have a balanced defence from a chances conceded perspective.

West Ham were a team that seemed as likely to keep a clean sheet against a top side as they were to concede a goal or two against a struggling side, therefore making their defenders must-starts in every game.

They are fortunate to count on a solid goalkeeper in Lukasz Fabianski (£5.0m). He had the 4th fewest parries to the opposition, but even he can’t legislate a team that tied with Arsenal for the most own goals (4).
