Route from qualification

Italy qualified very comfortably, winning all 10 games and only conceding four goals. Belgium were the only other qualifying country to win all 10 games. Italy also scored the joint 2nd most goals (behind Belgium).

They are currently top of their World Cup Qualifying Group, with 2-0 wins over Northern Ireland, Bulgaria and Lithuania. They also remained unbeaten in their Nations League group, keeping four clean sheets in six games (against Netherlands, Bosnia and Poland), so come into the competition in great form.

Furthermore, they have only conceded six goals in the 19 games across Euro and World Cup qualifying and the Nations League.

It is worth mentioning that in their last nine competitive matches, none have seen over two goals, showing their defensive stability but infrequency of blowing teams away.

Additionally, they are unbeaten in their last 23 encounters – the best record of any international team in the world.

I expect them to top the group and from there, a kind draw could take them the whole way.

Italy Euro 2020 Expected Lineup

I expect them to line up in a 4-3-3 formation like so:

Florenzi Bonucci Chiellini Spinazzolla

       Barella Jorginho Verratti

       Berardi Immobile Insigne

Veteran Georgio Chiellini has injury issues and is now 36 years old, so I don’t think he’ll start all three group games. Francesco Acerbi and Alessandro Bastoni are next in line for that spot.

Euro 2020 Team Preview – Italy

PSG midfielder Marco Verratti will start if fit but has fitness issues. Manuel Locatelli is likely to start in his absence.

Domenico Berardi faces tough competition in Federico Chiesa – the starter makes for a very tempting Fantasy option.

Ciro Immobile will start ahead of Andrea Belotti, but could easily be dropped in the second match if he doesn’t perform.

Leanardo Spinazzola should start at left back.

Italy Euro 2020 Best player pick:

Leonardo Bonucci is a nailed-on defensive option who does provide a threat from set-pieces. He has scored seven times for Italy in 101 caps.

Because he is certain to start and has some set-piece threat, he would be my first choice defensive option, closely followed by Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Italy Euro 2020 Under the Radar Players:

Donnarumma is a very solid goalkeeper choice and nailed way into the very strong Italian defence. He also has a very impressive penalty record.

Alessandro Florenzi is an alternative to Bonucci, and the second best defender of the back four (fantasy wise). His attacking numbers (three assists in 42 Italian caps) are not bad and he looks certain to start.

Leonardo Spinazzola‘s chances of starting have gone up significantly due to Chelsea left back Emerson’s lack of domestic minutes. He boasts an impressive record of two goals and eight assists this season and has a very decent record of four assists in 13 caps.

Lorenzo Insigne is the pick of the bunch in the attacking positions. He has five assists in six games in this season’s international campaign, 17 goals in Serie A and is nailed to start. He also gets a share in the set-pieces and has the third highest shot total in the top five European leagues this season.

Ciro Immobile is the focal point attack, but his goalscoring record for Italy isn’t great, with only 12 goals in 45 caps. He also faces competition from Andrea Belotti.

Domenico Berardi on the right flank is Italy’s top scorer this season with four goals in five games. He also has 16 goals and six assists this season for mid-table side Torino in the Serie A.

However, he faces competition from Federico Chiesa. But we will know he is starting in the first match, so I would be tempted to take a punt on one of them as a cheaper alternative to Insigne or Immobile.

Berardi has the second most passes into the penalty area in Europe’s top five divisions (only beaten by Messi), and ranks tenth in the charts for most shots per 90 minutes.

Italy Euro 2020 Players to avoid:

Avoid Chiellini, Bastoni and Acerbi, as none will play all three group games. Also avoid the midfield three of Jorginho, Verratti and Barella, who don’t offer enough goal threat to be fantasy options, despite Jorginho being the designated penalty taker.
