Route from qualification:

Slovakia finished third in their Euro qualification group, hence needing the play-offs to qualify. Also in their qualification group were fellow qualifiers Croatia, Wales and Hungary as well as minnows Azerbaijan.

The Slovakians won four of their eight encounters (all against Hungary and Azerbaijan), drew and lost to Wales and were beaten comfortably by Croatia 3-1 and 4-0.

They only kept two clean sheets (against Hungary and Azerbaijan) and conceded 11 – only North Macedonia and Scotland conceded more (and those two played ten games rather than eight). In front of goal, they scored a respectable 13.

After the qualification period, Slovakia finished bottom of their Nations League group consisting of Israel, Scotland and Czech Republic. Moreover, they only won once and lost four of the remaining five. Only Northern Ireland had a worse defensive record among the 16 teams in the second tier.

In the play-offs, Slovakia had to overcome Ireland on penalties following a 0-0 draw after-extra-time. That set up a final against Ireland’s northern rivals, which also needed extra-time. Slovakia clinched victory in that, scoring in extra-time to win 2-1.

This year, the Slovaks started poorly in their World Cup qualification, as they were held by minnows Cyprus and Malta. They made up for that considerably, with a 2-1 home win over Russia.

To conclude, I can’t see Slovakia reaching the group, and I expect them to lose all three games. However, I don’t think they’ll be comfortably beaten, and some of their attacking players appeal to me.

Expected lineup

 Pekarik – Skriniar – Satka – Hancko

       Kucka – Duda – Hamsik – Mak

David Hancko is likely to start over Tomas Hubocan, despite not featuring in any recent friendlies.

The other dubious position in the line-up is the centre-forward spot. Ivan Schranz could easily take Robert Buzenik’s spot.

Best player picks:

Left-back David Hancko has scored seven goals for club Slavia Prague in just 27 appearances this season. He has a genuine chance of taking penalties, like he does for his club side. However, it is unclear who in the Slovakian side will take that responsibility. In addition, he also gets forward for corners, which is unusual for a full-back. Clean sheets are very unlikely, however, and he is at risk from not starting.

Odrej Duda is probably most likely to take penalties after Hancko. He has seven goals and six assists in this seasons’ Bundesliga. He scored once and assisted twice in five qualifying appearances.

Captain Marek Hamsik will take the majority of set-pieces and was the Slovakian’s top scorer in qualifying, with three goals and an assist in eight appearances. Despite many thinking he’ll be the designated penalty-taker, I don’t. He hasn’t taken one since 2015, and Hancko, Duda and Juraj Kucka take them for their respective clubs.

Under the radar players:

Juraj Kucka scored and assisted the two play-off goals and is one of the possible penalty-takers. He scored seven goals from midfield in the Serie A this season and scored twice and assisted one in eight qualifying appearances.

Winger Robert Mak is the Slovakian’s joint top-scorer this international season, with two goals and an assist in five caps. He also gets a small share of set-pieces. However, he has only scored once in 26 appearances this season for club side Ferencvaros.

Players to avoid:

Avoid the defence besides left-back David Hancko. I can’t see any clean sheets and despite Milan Skriniar and Peter Pekarik providing a little of goal-threat, they aren’t options for me. Martin Dubravka is probably the best option in the defence other than Hancko (as long as save points are included). He will have a lot of saves to make and should be available as a budget-enabler.

Also avoid Patrik Hrosovsky, who doesn’t provide enough goal threat to be a genuine option.
