Route from qualification:

Spain topped their qualifying group, remaining unbeaten against the likes of opening opponents Sweden, Romania and Norway. They scored 31, which was the fifth most, and conceded five, which was also only bettered by four sides.

They faired well against Group E opponents Sweden in their first encounter, with a 3-0 win. However, they were held to a 1-1 draw in Stockholm, which highlighted the Swedes’ ability to cause an upset. I wouldn’t be surprised to see that again.

The only other side Spain dropped points to were Norway, who scored an injury time equaliser.

Since qualifying, Spain finished top of their top-tier Nations League group, only losing once. They did display signs of inconsistency, however, such as the 4-0 home-win over Ukraine being followed by a 1-0 loss just a month later.

I would like to point out that the Spaniards did struggle against those mid-strength sides that lined-up with a low-block. Spain were subjected to a 1-0 loss in Kyiv, and a one-all draw against the Swiss. They ended their Nations League campaign with an emphatic 6-0 smashing of Germany.

When a team attack, they play into Spain’s hands; but I am not convinced by Spain’s ability to break-down low blocks. They will have to do just that to get past Sweden, Poland and Slovakia.

This year, Spain have looked shaky. They started World Cup qualifying with a disappointing home draw to Greece, before almost being overthrown by minnows Georgia, who went 1-0 up before Spain recovered, needing an injury time winner to seal a nervy 2-1 win.

Finally, Spain overcame Kosovo 3-1 in their last game. The fact that Spain failed to keep a clean sheet in these three outings, and struggled to break-down Georgia and Greece, is particularly worrying.

It’s worth noting that leader Sergio Ramos wasn’t on the pitch for any of the three goals they conceded, and he isn’t in the final squad either.

In conclusion, Spain should have enough to top their group, but approach them with caution. They aren’t the force they once were, and their group-stage opponents will know how to frustrate them. I expect low-scoring encounters, tight matches and Spain to drop points in at least one of the three group games.

Euro 2020 Spain expected lineup

Llorente – Torres – Laporte – Alba

             Koke – Rodri – Thiago

           Torres – Morata – Olmo

Unai Simon is just ahead of Robert Sanchez and David de Gea in the goalkeeper pecking order.

In the back four, I expect Marcos Llorente to be preferred to Cesar Azpilicueta. Newcomer Aymeric Laporte should step in next to Pau Torres following the shock withdrawal of Sergio Ramos from the squad. At left-back, step-in captain Jordi Alba should be favoured over Jose Gaya.

Manchester City’s Rodri will start in the pivot.

Thiago Alcantara and Koke seem the most likely two in front of Rodri, but Koke’s spot is in jeopardy given the competition from Pedri and Fabian Ruiz.

Ferran Torres has cemented his place in the starting eleven following some excellent international performances. Meanwhile, RB Leipzig’s Dani Olmo faces a tough challenge to keep his spot from Pablo Sarabia. The centre-forward spot is the most questionable of the front three. Alvaro Morata is projected to start over the likes of Gerard Moreno, Mikel Oyarzabal and Rodrigo in what is arguably their weakest position.

Euro 2020 Fantasy Football Tips – Spain

Spain Euro 2020 Best Player picks:

None of the attacking players particularly stand-out in my opinion, so I think the two attacking-minded full backs are probably the best fantasy options.

Versatile Marcos Llorente should be an ever-present starter, whether in the right-back berth or in the midfield three. He has a whopping 12 goals and 11 assists in the La Liga this season, yet he might be classified as a defender!

Other sided full back Jordi Alba is an ever-present threat down the left-flank, and has the joint most assists for Spain this season, with three (despite only starting twice). Furthermore, he has five league goals and 15 assists in 49 appearances for Barcelona this season.

With that said, I’m uncertain that he will start all three group games, and it’s unknown how well the Spanish defence will fare without Ramos.

Under the radar players:

Manchester City youngster Ferran Torres has six goals in his ten caps, five of which were in his last four. He is by far Spain’s top-scorer this international season, with four goals more than any other player.

Goalkeeper Unai Simon is a potential bargain, due to the fact that many fantasy games haven’t clocked-on that he has become the first choice over David de Gea. Approach with caution though: manager Enrique has suggested Robert Sanchez has a good chance of starting.

Centre-forward Alvaro Morata has an impressive 18 goals and 12 assists in 43 domestic appearances this season, as well as two goals in the last four Spanish games, in which he started all four. Significantly, I think he will be the penalty taker replacement for Ramos.

RB Leipzig’s playmaker Dani Olmo looks likely to have a starting spot and will get a share of the set-pieces with the likes of Koke. He has seven goals and 12 assists in all competitions for club this season, and two goals in the last two Spanish games.

Pau Torres and Aymeric Laporte look likely to be ever-present starters, but don’t offer the attacking threat of the full-backs. They do have a kind group, however, and should be the cheapest options in the Spanish defence..

Players to avoid:

The midfield three don’t offer enough goal threat to be solid fantasy options.
