Arsenal 2021/22 Season Expectations

Arsenal go into their fifth consecutive season without Champions League football. Getting back there seems quite far off.

Despite only finishing six points behind Chelsea last season, they never seriously challenged for the top four after a poor start.

On Christmas Day they even sat as low as 15th. However, if the season had started then, they would’ve finished third. In that time only Manchester City conceded fewer, with one goal less.

It was their away form where they partially impressed during this period. Arsenal only lost twice in twelve and scored the second most. I’m not convinced that will continue though, given the reintroduction of fans in stadiums.

It wasn’t in just that spell where Arsenal’s defence impressed; only Chelsea and Manchester City conceded fewer goals across the whole season.

I can’t see Arsenal building on last season unless major incomings occur (I don’t think they will). They should prepare for another season without Champions League football.

How To Play Fantasy Premier League 2021/22 | The Beginner’s Guide

Arsenal Expected Lineup:

Arsenal line up

Bernd Leno should start in goal despite a number of rumours circulating around his future.

Kieran Tierney is certain to start in the back four. Expected newcomer Ben White should come straight into the team alongside Gabriel, rather than Rob HoldingHector Bellerín is expected to continue as first-choice right-back, should he remain at the club.

Granit Xhaka and Thomas Partey will partner each other in midfield, with the four ahead of them all nailed bar Nicolas Pépé. The Ivorian should start but could be dropped for Alexandre Lacazette. Mikel Arteta could then move Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to the left and Bukayo Saka to the right.

Arsenal Best Players:

Kieran Tierney

The best defensive asset in a side which proved their defensive capabilities last season. He scored once and assisted four in the Premier League last season despite missing over 1000 minutes through injury.

He averaged 1.1 key passes per game last season. To put that into perspective, Martin Ødegaard topped this metric for Arsenal in the Premier League last season with 1.4, but Luke Shaw and Trent Alexander-Arnold recorded double Tierney’s amount.

Tierney offered minimal goal threat, with only four players in the whole Arsenal squad recording fewer shots per 90. As well as that, Tierney’s shots were from the furthest distance in the whole squad, averaging his shots from 24.3 metres out.

Nicolas Pépé

He ended last season excellently so may have bagged himself a spot in the starting eleven. In all competitions, the Ivorian scored 16 goals and made five assists, with ten of those goals coming in the Premier League. Five of them came in his final three Premier League appearances.

Pépé scored an impressive 0.6 times per 90 minutes, which was only beaten by Alexandre Lacazette for the Gunners and twelve players in the whole division. It’s worth noting that a third of these players played fewer than 1000 minutes, whereas Pépé was allocated 1,612 minutes.

The winger averaged two shots in the penalty area per 90, which was the same as Harry Kane and only beaten by a handful of players. Pépé also gets a decent share of set-pieces. The only issue is whether he will start every game, so we might have to wait and see.

Fantasy Premier League 2021/22 Tips – Team Previews and Best Players

Arsenal Under the Radar Players:

Bukayo Saka

The England international racked up a competent record of five goals and five assists in the Premier League last season. He also registered a further two goals and five assists in other competitions.

Interestingly, all of those goal involvements, bar two assists, occurred when playing on the right side. This is despite Saka playing 40% of his games on the left side of midfield.

With Pépé possibly playing there, it puts me off Saka considerably. Additionally, he only has a measly six goals in 59 league appearances, which is far from good enough in my opinion.

Saka has a respectable 2.15 shots per 90 minutes, but only scored 8% of his shots, a record beaten by all three of the other front four and Lacazette.

He also faces a challenge to keep set-piece duties off Pépé, but they should take them in turns. Saka made 1.3 key passes per 90 minutes which was surprisingly low considering his decent assist record: six players in the squad made more key passes per 90.

Emile Smith-Rowe

The playmaker racked up just two goals and five assists in twenty Premier League appearances last season.

He was the main creator of chances in the current squad, making 1.4 key passes per game in the league. 38 players across the entire league had a higher key pass total per game.

Smith-Rowe only had 0.7 shots per match. This was beaten by the likes of Calum Chambers, Gabriel, Thomas Partey, Granit Xhaka, David Luiz and Cedric Soares in the Arsenal ranks. That being said, Arteta has publicly stated that it is being worked on.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Aubameyang had a poor season by his standards, finishing with only 10 league goals. However, his season involved a battle against malaria and a few injuries and illnesses just after picking up some form.

In my opinion, he is still Arsenal’s main goal threat, with penalties to also fall back on. He averaged the most shots per game in the Arsenal squad (2). 85% of these shots were in the 18 yard-box.

The Gabonese striker was having nearly 0.5 more shots per game the previous season and he also had a superior conversion rate. He had almost 0.5 extra shots on target and 8% more in terms of goals per shot.

Only one of his 10 Premier League goals came against top six opposition, so he is still a good captaincy option against weaker opposition.

He also got more than one goal involvement in a game on three occasions which was decent considering his average scoring record.

I think Aubameyang is being slept on. We’ve seen the likes of Jamie Vardy and Harry Kane drop off in recent seasons and they play a similar role in their respective clubs.

They didn’t have to deal with the same circumstances as Aubameyang either. A handy price-drop means he is definitely one to consider.

The Best Arsenal FPL Players 2021/22

Arsenal Players to Avoid:

Alexandre Lacazette should be subject to a notable amount of rotation. For that reason, he is too risky of an option for what it’s worth.

Rob Holding and Gabriel will fight to keep their spots from the incoming Ben White. It’s best to avoid them until it becomes clear who’s most nailed (if they are at all). They don’t offer any attacking threat and this especially applies to Holding.

Hector Bellerin’s future is uncertain, just like his spot in the line-up. There is no point gambling on him over Tierney who is around the same price.
