Hello there again fellow FPL managers, we are back with our captain picks for GW24. Like always, we did a poll on Twitter of the likely candidates and it was quite close this time around. Let’s have a look at the results:
As you can see Harry Kane was the top voted player again with 39% of the votes followed closely by Liverpool’s Mohammed Salah with 34%. Kane has been in great form recently with Salah returning from injury with another double points return against the league leaders. Many people considering Kun Aguero against Newcastle as well with 26% of the votes.
Firstly, I’ll be comparing the two highest scorers in the league so far.
Harry Kane Vs Mohammed Salah
Harry Kane and Mohammed Salah with 20 and 18 goals respectively are the highest scorers in the league so far. They both have been an integral part of our teams from the start of the season till now.
Harry Kane is the highest scoring forward in the game courtesy of his 20 goals and just a single assist this season, one thing to notice, however, is that most of his goals and in fact points have arrived in bunch given the fact that he has blanked in 12 of the 23 GWs so far including the DGW 22. This proves two things, firstly, if he bangs he could make it big with another goal or two and, secondly, there is a chance he may completely fail to deliver. Effectively, there is a high-risk high reward situation for the Spurs’ striker.
Mohammed Salah is the highest scoring player in the whole game due to his 18 goals and 8 assists this season. On one hand, Kane blanked nearly half of his games, Salah, on the other hand, has blanked only 5 of the 22 he has played. This shows more consistency from the Egyptian international than Kane. The Liverpool winger also boasts an astonishing ten double-figure gameweeks to his name. He thus becomes as solid an option as anyone.
We can see at first glance that Mohammed Salah’s graph is much better than that of Harry Kane. The Egyptian offers much more in terms of creativity and assists potential while offering almost similar goal threat as the Englishman. The Tottenham marksman only has 74% points of that of Salah and the winger offers 9.63 points per 90 which is way more than the 7.11 offered by Sir Harold.
These factors are very much in favour of the Liverpool man but another and possibly the most important factor is the opposition. While Spurs travel to the St. Mary’s Stadium to face struggling Southampton, Liverpool will travel to Wales to face Swansea. On paper, both fixtures look fairly straightforward but I am very sceptical for Liverpool’s chances against a defensively resolute Swansea side which has definitely looked to have improved under new manager Carlos Carvalhal.
Saints, on the other hand, have been leaking a lot of goals and given the fact that Harry scored a hattrick in the reverse fixture he would be quite confident going into the game.
Frankly, it is very tight between them and it’s very much possible that they both deliver. I am personally going with Kane this week but that is due to the fact that I don’t own Salah right now and I guess if I did that decision would be a very difficult one. For me, it’s 50-50 between them and there is no wrong or right choice.

Harry Kane: 0.55
Let’s now talk about Sergio Aguero. He will face Newcastle United at home and Man City would be looking to bounce back from their first defeat of the season in style. The Argentine will likely be in the goals in what I expect to be a convincing performance from the league leaders.
He already has 13 goals and 5 assists providing 7.3 points per 90 this season and given that he has been subject to a lot of rotation that is a very good return. The City no.10 would like to improve his goalscoring form to cement his spot in the first team now that Gabriel Jesus is due to return soon.
Everyone remembers his 5 goals against Newcastle in 2015, could something similar be on the cards?

Jamie Vardy makes it to our differential captain section this week. The former Premier League winner hasn’t been very consistent this season with only 4.7 points per 90 but this might be the week for him. The English international will welcome struggling Watford to the King Power this weekend. Watford have fallen off the pace since their amazing start to the season. They have conceded 13 big chances in the last 5 GWs and I can see Vardy putting them away if he gets the opportunity. There will be goals in this and I am expecting at least one if not more from the pacey striker.
Anytime Goalscoring Odds (In %) 0.50
Marko Arnautovic has been in the form of his life for the Hammers at this point of the season providing 5.7 points per 90. Given that all of his 6 goals and 3 assists came in the last 7 games this is a pretty extraordinary return. The Austrian played as the central striker in West Ham’s last game against Huddersfield and given that he excelled with a goal and a couple of assists I expect him to stay there. He will now play Bournemouth and they do concede a lot of goals and I expect a few returns from the Austrian as he will be brimming with confidence.
Anytime Goalscoring Odds (In %) 0.38
This week’s outrageous punt goes to Kyle Walker. Manchester City play Newcastle at the Etihad this week and I expect a near perfect performance from Pep Guardiola’s men after suffering their first defeat of the season last week. Kyle Walker will be very much involved in everything that the league leaders conjure up in an attacking sense and given that a clean sheet is virtually guaranteed an assist or two could be on the cards for the English international who already has five to his name. Who knows, if you are lucky enough maybe his first goal of the season as well.

These were my captain picks for GW24. I am personally going with Kane this week but all of the above options are worth the consideration. I hope this article helped you pick your captain and if it did then it would make this article worth it for me. Have a great gameweek full of green arrows and I hope your captains don’t let you down. This is Varun signing out.
