Who is the best FPL Double Gameweek 19 captain? Our resident FPL captaincy expert Chris Tan takes a close look at the fixtures, poll and stats breakdown before concluding on his best pick for the armband.

FPL Gameweek 18 Recap

After all the Free Hit excitement it turned into quite an underwhelming affair and I got away with saving that chip for the future by fielding just nine players, with the core of a Free Hit squad covered.

Sheffield United finally broke their duck, but that was more a case of Newcastle being awful than any signs of a resurrection. United scraped by against Burnley and Pogba’s (£7.7m) thriving in his Grealish role. Wolves continue to look vulnerable when they field a four man defence. Man City threatened to explode, but their poor finishing let then down again. Spurs let another lead slip, as Mourinho refuses to shoulder the blame, with Fulham showing real fight. Lastly, Arsenal and Palace ended in a bore draw.

How have we done to date?

Oh what could have been... not only did De Bruyne (£11.8m) fail to convert two Big Chances (BC), but he gave away the penalty in the final minutes of the game, which would have given him an additional five points and likely maximum bonus. So that one cost us eight points! Thanks a lot Kevin.

Fernandes (£11.3m) blanked and was overshadowed but not out ‘statted’ by Pogba.

Aubameyang (£11.3) did what he’s done all season, he’s disappointed.

FPL Gameweek 19 Captain - The Fixtures

It’s finally here, as soon as Gameweek 18 is over we have the first double Gameweek of the season. The Fulham game has moved now, so it’s a Saturday deadline at 11:00am GMT.

The scenario has changed so many times already, but as I’m drafting this it’s been confirmed that Leeds v Southampton will be postponed so that the Shrewsbury FA Cup game can be played and that means both teams no longer double. It’s also been announced that the Villa v Everton game has been deferred and replaced with Newcastle at the back end of the week. That means that Villa still have a double Gameweek (and so do Newcastle), but Everton blank. Confused? I know I am.

FPL Gameweek 19 Captain - History

Before you ask, Fernandes (£11.3m) hasn’t had the pleasure of playing against Liverpool or Fulham in the league yet. It’s also been announced that Ings (£8.3m) has COVID and that Southampton no longer have a double Gameweek.

  •  Rashford (£9.6m) – seems to do alright against Liverpool and certainly enjoyed playing against Fulham in the 18/19 season. All his returns came at home though. Without crowds and given how United have performed away compared to at home this season, I don’t think this anomaly will continue.
  • De Bruyne (£11.7m) – is another that likes his home comforts with all his goals against Palace coming from the Etihad although he did blank against them in both fixtures last season. That wasn’t the case against Villa and he recorded all of his returns there last year.
  • Vardy (£10.2m) – his stats against Southampton are misleading, as they’ve been massively boosted by a hat trick in the 0-9 game last season. He blanked against Chelsea last season and doesn’t have a great record against them.
  • Salah (£12.5m) – he finally broke his duck against United scoring at home against them last season and he hasn’t returned against Burnley at home in the last two season. This doesn’t strike me with confidence for captaining him (never mind triple captaining).

The records of the other candidates aren’t worth discussing.

Members Stats breakdown - FPL Gameweek 19 Captain

These stats are pulled from the Fantasy Football Hub OPTA tool that is available to all Members to help you analyse the players and teams.

I’ve pulled the stats on Thursday prior to the end of the Arsenal game and used the last six gameweeks (representing the stats as ‘per appearance’), as several teams have missed matches lately and also to give an indication of how a side might perform across two fixtures.
