This article takes a deep dive look at the all important Fantasy Premier League Gameweek 33+ captain decision. It's written by our resident FPL captaincy expert Chris Tan who takes a close look at the fixtures, poll and stats breakdown before concluding on his best pick for the armband.
FPL Gameweek 32+ Captain Recap
Well done if you Captained Aubameyang, Bruno or Kevin De Bruyne (KDB). You would have made massive gains on your opponents, as a lot of the main picks blanked.
What have we learnt?
Patience – Bruno and Richarlison blanked last week, so players were quick to ditch them and they were punished. Similarly, Nick Pope was sold en masse after the City thrashing but then he picked up nine and 10 points in his last two games. Most will have six transfers left for the season, use them wisely.
Differentials – a few players are starting to grab my attention. Greenwood (4.4 million) is only owned by 12.6% of the game with great fixtures and he looks to have nailed that starting position. Only 2.2% own Saint-Maximin (5.5), he’s recorded three double figure hauls in his last four games, it’s time to pay attention. If West Ham are going to survive they’re relying on the 0.8% owned Antonio (6.9) to save them. He plays 90 minutes every game, he’s classed as a midfielder but he plays as their centre forward. Chelsea have two amazing options in Pulisic (7) owned by 6.8% and has averaged 7.33 points per game since the restart. He’s been overshadowed by the 5.3% owned Willian (7.1) though who has two back to back double digit hauls thanks to his set pieces. Lastly, the amazing Foden (5.2) has returned in every game he’s played so far with two double figure hauls. I haven’t included Ings because he’s still owned by 26.2% of the game.
Whipping Boys – from what I’ve seen so far it has to be Norwich, Bournemouth and to a lesser extent Watford (and Liverpool! Jokes). Those are the teams I will be targeting with regards to both Captaincy and attacking assets.
How have we done to date?
A few were worried about the jinx of the first pick, but it finally came good. I was expecting goals in the City game but I forgot that Salah doesn’t score away and to always back De Bruyne at Home.
FPL Gameweek 33+ Captain - The Fixtures+
Gameweek 33+ fixtures are the reverse of Gameweek 11, here’s what happened last time:
Bournemouth v Man Utd – you can tell this was a long time ago, the fortunes have transformed for both sides.
Arsenal v Wolves - no prizes for guessing that it was Aubameyang and Jimenez that scored in this one.
Aston Villa v Liverpool – Mane picked up a goal and assist in the reverse fixture. Also, both Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold (TAA) came away with an attacking return.
Man City v Southampton – lockdown party man Kyle Walker grabbed a goal and assist in this fixture with another goal from the injured Aguero. Danny Ings didn’t return for anyone thinking about bringing him back.
Watford v Chelsea – both Pulisic and Abraham scored in the reverse fixture.
Crystal Palace v Leicester – Vardy scored, but he might not enjoy the same amount of space now that teams are setting up more defensively post lockdown.
Everton v Spurs – for Everton this one had an assist from Digne and a goal from the forgotten man Tosun. For Spurs it was a goal from Alli with an assist from their wing back Son.
Twitter / @FFH_HQ FPL Gameweek 33+ Captain Poll
Who do our Twitter followers think is the best FPL Gameweek 30+ captain?
Old Hunting Ground – do any of the likely lads have a good history vs their opposition?
There are some cracking options this week:
Mane – it’s a tiny sample but he has an impressive record. He played almost the full game against City, but I can’t see Liverpool rotating much after that performance. They will be fuming.
KDB – has a great record against Southampton, but his bigger hauls against them (and in general) tend to have come at Home. He played the full 90 minutes against Liverpool and I can’t see him getting many minutes in the next game.
Sterling – also has a great record against Southampton, but similar to KDB the bigger returns have come at Home against them. He’s looked very lively since the restart with two double-figure hauls and if Jesus continues to be poor he might find himself up front more often. He got brought off early against Liverpool and he’s an excellent candidate this week.
Pulisic – it’s a tiny sample, but 100% looks good. He played 90 minutes against West Ham and Chelsea are likely to rotate but the top four race is getting rather tight and they need him.
TAA – I can’t see Aston Villa scoring against Liverpool and if he picks up another attacking return then that’s double figures. He got taken off early against City and he’s an excellent punt option.
Vardy – for anyone that still has him, he has an excellent record against Brighton, but Leicester and Vardy look out of sorts at the moment.
Martial – doesn’t have the best record against Bournemouth but only two of the nine games were played as a centre forward.
Rashford – has a similar record to Martial and both will benefit from the presence of Pogba and Bruno.
Members Stats breakdown - FPL Gameweek 33+ Captain
These stats are pulled from the Fantasy Football Hub OPTA Stats tool that is available to all members to help you analyse the players and teams.
I have pulled data from the last three Gameweeks and displayed them as ‘per appearance’. This is to take account of the fact that a lot of players will have reduced minutes with five substitutions allowed. Please note that the sample is tiny and you can’t read too much into these stats. The data was taken immediately after the City game and prior to the addition of bonus points.
