Gameweek 10 has a number of good home fixtures especially for some of the better defensive teams such as Leicester, Manchester City, Arsenal and West Ham United. There are plenty to choose from this week and after some number crunching, I have picked the top five defenders for this Gameweek looking at the form, fixtures, and underlying stats.
Andrew Robertson (£7.1m) – Liverpool
Fixture: Brighton (a)
The Scotsman rewarded his loyal owners last Gameweek with a nice 12 point haul after picking up an assist, clean sheet and three bonus points against Leicester City (H) in only Liverpool’s second clean sheet of the season. Robertson now has picked up one goal and three assists and has been looking dangerous down that left side since the start of the season. He has 7 Shots, 2 Shots on Target and 6 Shots in the Box and has also created 14 Chances and 5 Big Chances which is fourth and first among all defenders.
They travel to Brighton in Gameweek 10 and I think this will be another good game for him as the Seagulls attacking stats are quite mediocre having scored 13 goals (15th), had 31 Shots on Target (15th), 69 Shots in the Box (7th), and 16 Big Chances (14th). Liverpool attacking wise are by far the best in the league and Robertson gets involved in those attacks a lot. He has 203 passes in the final third which is top among all defenders and also fourth overall from all players, and is also top for crosses into the box (76) from all players. He is also on corners and some indirect free kick so has a very high assist threat. He is always linking well down the left with Sadio Mane (£12.1m) and always looks like getting attacking returns.
The Reds will be buoyed with their first clean sheet in six Gameweeks and especially because three of their first-team defenders are out. I still think they will keep a fair few clean sheets over their good run of fixtures and the safety net with the left-back is he always has a chance of attacking returns.
João Cancelo (£5.5m) – Manchester City
Fixture: Burnley (H)
João Cancelo has been one of the most attacking defenders in the league since he joined Manchester City. After playing only five games he has created 15 Chances (3rd among defenders), and 2 Big Chances (3rd among defenders). Since his first game in Gameweek 5, he has played every single minute in the league and in that period sits top for most Final Third passes amongst defenders (122) and also Successful Final Third Passes (95).
Looking at the defensive metrics Manchester City have the best stats by far. They have only conceded 63 Shots (1st), 38 Shots in the Box (1st), 26 Shots on Target (1st) and 15 Big Chances (5th) whilst also have the second-best xGC (10.53). Although their attack hasn’t been what it was in past seasons, their defence is still solid and with the great run of fixtures they have coming up should keep a fair few clean sheets.
In Gameweek 10 they host Burnley who have scored the least amount of goals so far (4) and have the second lowest xG (7.51). You won't be surprised to hear their attacking stats are also amongst the worst in the league also with 23 Shots on Target (19th), 41 Shots in the Box (20th), and 10 Big Chances (19th).
Furthermore, the Blues are strong favourites to keep a clean sheet out of all teams in Gameweek 10 at a very high 55% and with Cancelo you also have a good chance of some attacking returns too. He does attack and stay in the opponent's half quite a lot and you would imagine City will dominate the possession for the majority of this game so can see him being in and around the box a lot.
Lucas Digne (£6.1m) – Everton
Fixture: Leeds United (H)
I picked Lucas Digne last Gameweek due to his high assist threat and he proved himself by picking up two assists and a nice 8 points. He has been a great option so far this season and his attacking stats have been very impressive. He has now picked up five assists (3rd overall) and has a decent fixture in Leeds United at home in Gameweek 10. The Frenchman has created 16 Chances (2nd amongst defenders), and 5 Big Chances (1st amongst defenders) and only James Rodriguez has created more chances than him in the Everton team.
They face Leeds United at home and although they have been one of the best sides attacking wise in the league this season I still fancy Digne due to his creativity and chances of assists. He also occasionally takes corners and free kicks.
Also as a team, the Toffees are really attacking and will score plenty of goals. They have scored 19 goals (3rd), with 41 Shots on Target (8th), 66 Shots in the Box (8th) and 21 Big Chances (5th) and have also created 15 Big Chances (3rd). This is a good fixture for the attacking Everton assets and with Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s form that should spell more assists for the French left-back as three of his assists now have been for the Englishman. With it being a home fixture there is also a chance of a clean sheet but on this rare occasion, I am picking a defender primarily for his attacking threat. He got eight assists in the whole of last season and with five already this season and with Everton being a much better attacking team I think he will surpass that figure easily.
Aaron Cresswell (£5.2m) – West Ham United
Fixture: Aston Villa (H)
The Hammers have had a great start to the season and been one of the surprise packages. They have picked up an impressive four clean sheets (1st) and their defensive numbers have been superb too. They have only conceded 52 Shots in the Box (4th), 33 Shots on Target (4th), and 14 Big Chances (4th) despite their extremely hard set of opening fixtures.
They have kept back to back clean sheets against Fulham (H) and Sheffield United (a) and now face an Aston Villa side who also had a great start to the season, but have been a bit shaky lately. After keeping three clean sheets in their first four games and only conceding two goals, they have conceded nine goals and kept one clean sheet in their previous four.
Aaron Cresswell is now the third-highest scoring defender, has three assists to his name along with his four clean sheets and looking at his attacking numbers he is sure to pick up more. He has created the most chances (18) out of all defenders in the league and also created the third most Big Chances (2). With him being on some corners and free kicks this helps his case further.
With West Ham’s defensive numbers this will be a tough game for Aston Villa and Cresswell has a chance of points at both ends of the pitch. It does seem a hard one to call as Villa’s attacking numbers are good but West Ham have one of the best defences in the league just now and have just kept two clean sheets on the trot. However, as always I like to pick defenders who have as many avenues to points as possible and the West Ham man certainly falls under that bracket.
Patrick van Aanholt (£5.4m) – Crystal Palace
Fixture: Newcastle United (H)
Patrick Van Aanholt has been a great fantasy option over the years with both goals and assists in his locker and playing for a fairly solid defensive Palace side. In the past two seasons, he has scored six goals, four assists and an impressive 20 clean sheets in the league. The Eagles have always been a good defensive side under Roy Hodgson although this season they haven’t lived up to their reputation with just one clean sheet so far.
The Dutch defender has been injured for the most part of the season and only got his first start in Gameweek 7 against Wolves. In his three starts, he has already picked up an assist. In Gameweek 10, Palace come up against Newcastle United who have been quite abysmal in the final third. They have only had 72 Shots (20th), 21 Shots on Target (20th), 42 Shots in the Box (19th) and 11 Big Chances (18th). They also have the third-worst xG (8.51) and as a team have created the second least amount of Big Chances (6).
Crystal Palace defensively have been just about where you expect. They have conceded 75 Shots in the Box (17th), 38 Shots on Target (8th), and 19 Big Chances (18th). Looking at this we have to bear in mind they have played Manchester United, Everton, Chelsea, Wolves and Leeds United. The Magpies are a totally different prospect to the mentioned teams and are really struggling to score just now.
Van Aanholt is by far their most attacking defender. Last season he scored three goals and two assists with 27 Shots, 6 Shots on Target and 13 Shots in the Box. He also created 32 Chances and 5 Big Chances. In the three games, he has started this season he already has 6 Shots (2nd), 2 Shots on Target (2nd), 4 Shots in the Box (2nd) and has created 2 chances. He will pick up more attacking returns throughout the season and he has a good opportunity to keep a clean sheet in Gameweek 10. Crystal Palace are the fifth highest team for a clean sheet chance this Gameweek according to bookies with 36%.
In conclusion, I will rank these Gameweek 10 defenders in accordance to our Power Rankings for Hub members!
