The start of the 2019/2020 FPL season is just around the corner. Don’t worry, though, on the Hub we have all the Gameweek 1 FPL tips you could ask for. This article will act as a summary of all our content and advice in one place that we’ll keep updated as we near the Gameweek 1 deadline. We’ll also finish off with our Hub XI – our top tips for Gameweek 1 – so be sure to check out the end of the article as well!

Learn from the best

We are fortunate on the Hub to have some of the all-time best FPL players. Even better for you is that they have been revealing their trade secrets ahead of Gameweek 1.

  • Matthew Jones, arguably the best FPL player of all time, has pulled together his four key principles to FPL success and revealed his Gameweek 1 side
  • 3rd place overall last year has produced this excellent article on what got him to onto the podium
  • Richard Clarke has been playing FPL for 13 years and never finished outside the top 35,000 in overall rank. His Pre-Season guides, can be viewed here along with his Gameweek 1 drafts here
  • FPL Heisenberg and I have worked hard on our How To Win at FPL 9 part series. I’ve also pulled together this companion video series and you can see Heisenberg’s Gameweek 1 team here
  • Tim, who has come top 250 overall in the last two seasons, has produced this excellent piece on decision making
  • Andrew Furguson, another top player across multiple formats (not just FPL) has revealed his different draft team here.
  • Chris Tan now his very popular Gameweek 1 captaincy piece here.

Our Pre-Season Guide

Our full Pre-Season guide can be found here, but I’ll summarise the key articles below as we head into Gameweek 1

Make a plan

Obviously starting the season well is not just about your Gameweek 1 side. Having a plan is crucial to doing well. Fortunately, both our Hub planners have received upgrades for the upcoming season. Try out:

Don’t forget the Pods!

The Hub XI

Based on the Hub fixture ticker, We’ll be targeting players from Liverpool, Bournemouth and Spurs with a sprinkling of talent from the other teams.

Keeper & Defence

Pope – 4.5

Nick Pope makes the cut between the sticks. Burnley keepers have a tendency to rack up save points and clean sheets. That coupled with a kind price tag and a relatively easy home-tie against The Saints makes Pope an attractive option for Gameweek 1.

Alexander Arnold 7.0 & Robertson 7.0

Premium price tags should not put you off this Liverpool duo.  They both came top for points per million per start figures over last season (see figure below). Van Dijk coming in 3rd place. Impressively this was for all positions not just defenders, making these two arguably the best value pick in the game. To have a play around with our new OPTA stats tool, click here.

Walker-Peters 5.0

With Trippier off to Spain and Aurier injured, the young Spurs right-back looks pretty nailed on to start in Gameweek 1. Coming in at a kind 5.0 price tag and playing promoted Villa at home on the opening weekend – what’s not to like?

Coleman 5.5

Over the last 10 Gameweeks of last season, Coleman averaged an impressive 7.38 points per appearance and ranked best for value among all player during this time. That combined with a slightly kinder price than Digne give him the nod.

Midfielders

Salah – 12.5

The Egyptian might have the highest price tag, but it’s for a reason. Arguably the best captaincy contender as Liverpool take on The Canaries on home turf, he’s one of the first names on our team sheet.

Fraser – 7.5

28 big chances created last season, that’s 12 more than D.Silva in 2nd place. With a plum home tie against newly-promoted Sheffield united and a kind price tag there is plenty of reason to be optimistic of the this Scotsman will get off to a flyer.

Sterling – 12.0

Pre Season form, last season form, great fixtures and impressive numbers. Sterling makes the cut, easy decision.

Moura – 7.5

With Kane, unfortunately, out of our budget and Son suspended, we turn to his Brazilian strike partner for a way into Spurs’ attacking line up. Over the last seven Gameweeks of last season, Moura ranked top for xG (expected goals) amongst midfielders priced less than 11 million. Tidy.

Forwards

Callum Wilson – 8.0

Wilson’s xATT (expected attacking FPL points) per game was 2.82 last season, only bettered by Kane amongst forward options. Coming in 3 million cheaper than the Spurs frontman, gives Wilson the edge. Counterpart King also represents a solid pick if you’re trying to save the pennies.

Deulofeu 6.5

Squaring up to a Brighton side known for its travel sickness grants Deulopheu a slot in our XI. Declared git and raring to go for Gameweek 1 he could be a shrewd pick for the opening day.
