Have you ever wondered what the best method is for selecting a captain? Is it an FPL prediction algorithm? Is it to look at anytime goal scoring odds? Is it to pick the top player in the polls? Or is it to listen to the wise words of FPL tipsters?
This series is all about putting these captaincy selection methods to the test.
We’ll be taking the top three picks according to an FPL algorithm, bookies anytime goalscoring odds, the captaincy poll and those of a special guest.
Each pick will be weighted so that the top pick receives 100% of their points, 2nd 85% and 3rd 70%. Each prediction method will also have one bench pick in case any of their top three doesn’t start. A running tally will be kept to find out that all-important question – which one is the best?
A damp squib all round for DGW37 captaincy picks. Only Kane managed to bring home any attacking returns. It’s still all to play for as we head into a final showdown for GW38.
GW38 FPL Captains
The Algorithm is still in with a shot of winning the overall crown. It may well come down to differential third-place pick Sanchez, and whether he will start and score heavily. Mane is waiting in the wings should the Chillien be benched ahead of United’s FA cup final.
- Salah: Expected points – 8.4pts
- Kane: Expected points – 6.4pts
- Sanchez: Expected points – 5.8pts
Bench player: Mane (5.8pts)
The Bookies odds are split between the top two heavyweights. Having looked at other markets, there is a slight favouring of Salah over Kane. Aubameyang sneaks into third spot just ahead of Rashford.
- Salah – odds: 1.4
- Kane – odds: 1.4
- Aubameyang – odds: 1.75
Bench player: Rashford 1.75

The Community head into the final gameweek as favourites to win the captaincy challenge. But with just a four points lead, it’s far from a foregone conclusion. This time around, the FPL twitter masses have opted for a tried and trusted Salah and Kane combination to see them over the line. Aubameyang’s recent form has edged him in front of Jesus for the final third place spot.
For the grand finale, The Tipsters have drafted in a fantasy heavyweight and renowned FPL expert Mark Mc Gettigan aka the FPL General. The General has had a stormer of a season and is sitting pretty well inside the top 1k managers.
Who are your top three picks and why?
The Egyptian has been sensational this season. He needs just eight FPL points against Brighton to hit 300 for the campaign and I’ve no doubt he’ll do so. Brighton are safe, so I can see a big Liverpool win on Sunday with plenty of points for Mo.
Kane hasn’t been firing on all cylinders in recent weeks, but he remains a great captaincy option for GW38 against a Leicester side that has been shipping goals for fun since they hit the 40-point mark. Kane is just three goals behind Salah in the race for the Golden Boot and he will be desperate to score four on Sunday.
Aubameyang is making a strong case for inclusion in our gameweek one squads next season. The Gabon international has an impressive Premier League record of 9 goals and 4 assists in 12 appearances. I expect him to add to those tallies against Huddersfield who are now safe from relegation.
Bench player: Arnautovic

Tipsters in 2nd
Couldn’t have been much closer in the end.
This challenge series has been a closely fought contest with each of our prediction methods topping the pile on different occasions. As we head into the final gameweek, Salah and Kane are once again occupying the top spots. The Tipsters may find it difficult to overtake The Community given they have gone for the same top three.
