Manchester United 2021/22 Season Expectations

Despite sitting second for the majority of last season, Manchester United failed to legitimately challenge Manchester City to the title.

This season’s target will be to do just that, as well as go deep into the Champions League. However, at the moment I can’t see Man United bridging the gap.

Jadon Sancho appears to be their only key incoming, whilst Man City are lining up deals for Harry Kane and Jack Grealish. In my opinion, Sancho doesn’t actually strengthen the Man United team  much, and I think that once again Man United’s recruitment will once again cost them a title charge.

That all being said, United should comfortably secure top four and have a decent European run.

Manchester United 2021/22 Expected lineup

Manchester United’s line-up shouldn’t see many alterations. As mentioned, Jadon Sancho looks to be the only major incoming.

Dean Henderson made the goalkeeper spot his own at the backend of last season, so should remain the number one. Meanwhile, the back four should remain the same, with the only slight uncertainty being Victor Lindelof‘s spot; if United do strengthen in that area, his spot would be the one in question.

Paul Pogba should partner Scott McTominay in the centre of midfield, although Fred will get the occasional start.

Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes‘ spots are locked in, whereas I expect Jadon Sancho to come in and replace Mason Greenwood.

Edinson Cavani will be first choice up top, but won’t be able to play every game; he actually only started 13 games last season. Mason Greenwood or Anthony Martial will take his place in his absence.

Manchester United Best Players:

Bruno Fernandes is the stand-out pick in the United side. He scored 28 goals and assisted 17 in all competitions last season and score seven more than any Man United player in the Premier League.

The Red Devils’ talisman will have the biggest share of set-piece duties as well as penalties. I don’t recommend going without him.

Luke Shaw is the pick of the defensive options. He scored once and made five in the Premier League last season, and was second in the Man United ranks for key passes per game.

Shaw was quite unlucky to only register five assists: he totalled an xA of 6.47. He also takes left-sided set-pieces. Man United’s defence doesn’t particularly impress me; they only kept six clean sheets at home last season, and one in their last nine Premier League games.

Manchester United Under the Radar Players:

Marcus Rashford is undeservedly going under the radar. He was second in Man United’s goal involvement charts last season, totalling 22 – 11 of each. That was a record only beaten by Harry Kane, Bruno Fernandes, Mo Salah, Son Heung Min, Patrick Bamford and Jamie Vardy.

The season before, he scored 17, which would have equalled Fernandes’ tally last season. Rashford is nailed to play every game, and will save you money if you opt for him over Fernandes. I think the difference in their numbers will be much shorter this season, so Rashford could provide better value. Moreover, he’s particularly a good asset away from home. He scored five and assisted seven in 15 away starts. He is also the second-choice penalty taker.

Harry Maguire would be my second choice defensive option. He’s a guaranteed starter and is the main threat from set-pieces. He averaged 1.04 shots per game. In comparison, regular centre back partner Victor Lindelof only averaged 0.14, Shaw averaged 0.37 and Aaron Wan-Bissaka averaged 0.24.

Dean Henderson should be the Red’s starting goalkeeper, but actually only kept a clean sheet every 3.1 games last season. With limited saves to make, I think there are better options. That being said, Man United had the fifth best defensive record last season, and should a centre half come in, that should only improve.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka is probably the third best defensive option. His attacking involvement improved last season, nearly doubling his previous goal involvement tally of four, with seven. Shaw beat him in every single attacking underlying stat per 90 minutes, including an extra 0.11 xA, 0.10 xA+xG, and 0.13 shots.

Fantasy Premier League 2021/22 Tips – Team Previews and Best Players

Manchester United Players to Avoid:

Edinson Cavani never started more than two consecutive Premier League games last season, and he only played two consecutive games three times. For a premium priced forward, this is far from ideal.

Victor Lindelof‘s spot in the line-up isn’t completely settled, and he doesn’t offer the attacking threat of Shaw, Maguire and Wan-Bissaka.

Scott McTominay, Fred and Paul Pogba don’t provide enough goal threat to be genuine fantasy prospects for a start.

Mason Greenwood and Anthony Martial are likely to rotate, so aren’t options for me.
