Former Sky Sports Fantasy Football champion Dan Cox brings us his latest diary, documenting the highs and lows of his Fantasy Football season.
The early kick off between Newcastle and Manchester City got me off to a fairly good start. Raheem Sterling scored and earned tier two shots bonus. After three games without a goal, and just one in the last six - it was good to see my patience rewarded with a goal.
Kevin de Bruyne scored a rocket of a shot, and also earned tier two shots bonus and tier one passing bonus for a 13 point haul.
Annoyingly Manchester City twice threw away the lead and left Ederson without a clean sheet again. City despite keeping five clean sheets this season just aren’t doing it for me.
There wasn’t much else to shout about on Saturday, my captain Sadio Mane failed to score but did earn tier one shots bonus.
Sunday was where most of my points were coming from. I captained Jamie Vardy who I brought in for Raheem Sterling. And he duly delivered with a goal.
After holding him for seemingly too long Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang repaid my patience with a brace against Norwich. Evidently I picked the wrong captain but Vardy seemed the safest option.
John McGinn rediscovered his bonus touch with tier one tackles against Manchester United. I made a couple of moves that I wasn’t planning but also won’t come as a surprise. I’m absolutely sick of Arron Wan-Bissaka. United have been looking pretty useless at the back and Wan-Bissaka hasn’t even been making tackle bonus of late. So I decided he was to make way for a player from a form team who was keeping clean sheets and getting bonus. Ricardo Pereira came in.
This now leaves me with three Leicester defenders and five Leicester players in total with James Maddison and Jamie Vardy. Whilst it was disappointing to see Leicester lose their clean sheet it was nice to see all my defenders return one form of bonus or an assist.
I also decided to ditch Ederson, I wasn’t planning on this move but I’m sick of city not looking as solid at the back without Laporte. So I decided to bring in Dean Henderson. One this gained me an extra game as Sheffield United played on Sunday and two it would provide me with a captain on Friday 10th January when Sheffield United host West Ham on a single game day. Yes I look that far ahead. This move also allows me to upgrade McGinn to Dele Alli which is what I did on Wednesday night.
But before that I was sweating a bit ahead of Tuesday nights action. After losing Ederson and Sterling my sole Man City coverage was Kevin de Bruyne. And I was particularly worried about him being benched and leaving me without a captain. Thankfully the Belgian started on Tuesday and I was in luck. Whilst he did hit tier one shot bonus Pep Guardiola took him off just six passes shy of tier one pass bonus - how annoying. A four point captain is rather disappointing.
Wednesday again was looking like a good night for points. Unfortunately Ben Chilwell missed out with injury and Fikayo Tomori was benched. Tomori is a bit of a concern. If he’s not starting at the weekend I’ll have to look at shifting him.
Mane scored, assisted twice and took home the MOTM award. He should have scored a hat trick. 16 points but unfortunately I captained Jamie Vardy who only managed a solitary goal. There were also clean sheets for Caglar Soyuncu and Ricardo Pereira and another Leicester player James Maddison scored a last minute goal. New signing Dele Alli continues his fine form with another goal which was a nice reward for bringing him in.
I had two players in action - Dean Henderson and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyeang. I captained Aubameyang, but it was a disappointing night for both. Henderson conceded twice and Aubameyang failed to have a shot on target and had the least touches of any player that played 90 minutes.
167 points for the week and at a cost of four transfers. Those transfers weren’t done for this week though. They are part of the longer plan. I don’t have any moves planned for a while now. I have good coverage with the players I have. It’s a pity that Arsenal play Monday as I’d happily lose Aubameyang now, but it makes sense to hold him for now.
I started the week in 1361st and ended it in 1068th. It’s going to be a tough few weeks and maybe even until the overhaul to start making some headway into the top 500 and above.
