<h2>Southampton 2020/21 Season Summary &#8211; Fantasy Football Tips</h2>
There was a lot of optimism about <a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/the-best-southampton-fpl-players/">Southampton </a>at the beginning of last season, and in a lot of ways it was deserved.
They ended the &#8216;project restart&#8217; season as the in-form team, boasting one of the league&#8217;s best forwards in <a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/who-are-the-best-fpl-mid-priced-forwards/">Danny Ings </a>and were beginning to look like a real force.
That initial optimism did last (and spiraled) for the best few weeks. Southampton actually sat top of the table after eight games, albeit only for a day, and remained in the top three until 14 games in.
After that point, they dropped down to finish 15th in the league which was bitterly disappointing given their early season form.
In the final 25 games, Southampton actually finished bottom. They also conceded the most goals in that time, letting in exactly two goals per game.
They conceded the fourth most big chances in that time (less than <a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/crystal-palace-fantasy-football-tips-team-preview/">Crystal Palace</a> and <a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/the-best-newcastle-fpl-players/">Newcastle</a>). Southampton were relatively unlucky with their xGC, conceding seven more goals than they were expected to, although that could have been down to bad goalkeeping.
It was mainly down to their away form that their record was so dismal. They only won once in their final twelve away games, and lost ten of the other eleven.
Southampton conceded a whopping 33, 10 more than any other team, in those 12 games. Ralph Hasenhüttl&#8217;s side only scored seven goals in this period which was the second lowest total.
It&#8217;s also worth mentioning that key man <a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/who-are-the-best-fpl-budget-midfielders/">Oriol Romeu</a> missed 17 of the 24 games after Christmas, and that I think that played a huge part in their woes.

<h2>Southampton 2021/22 Season Expectations &#8211; Fantasy Football Tips</h2>
I think their form will change heading into this season. The Saints were pretty much on the beach for the final few months, and Hasenhüttl&#8217;s intense pressing system means his side will be at peak fitness at the beginning of the season.
As well as that, the return of fans should benefit Southampton away from home. Teams will be forced to be more expansive, playing into the hands of the Saints&#8216; high press.
Southampton will be hoping to better last season, and I think they will do so.
Despite only one newcomer, it should add more to their side than most of the teams around them have added, and Hasenhüttl is well backed by both the players and the board.
So long as Southampton tighten up defensively, there&#8217;s not much stopping them from achieving a top ten finish. However, the likes of Ings, Romeu and <a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/who-are-the-best-fpl-mid-priced-defenders/">Jannick Vestergaard</a> will need to stay injury free.

<a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/who-are-the-best-fpl-budget-goalkeepers/">Alex McCarthy</a> narrowly edges Fraser Forster for the number one spot right now, but there could be rotation.
The back four will consist of Kyle Walker-Peters, Jan Bednarek, Vestergaard and newcomer Romain Perraud when all four are fit.
Oriol Romeu and James Ward-Prowse will pivot the midfield, with Stuart Armstrong occupying either wide spot.
Nathan Redmond, Moussa Djenepo, Theo Walcott and Nathan Tella will all compete for the other wide position, with the former most likely to be first choice.

<h2>Southampton Best Players &#8211; Fantasy Football Tips</h2>
<h3>Danny Ings</h3>
The former <a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/the-best-burnley-fpl-players/">Burnley</a> striker couldn’t recreate his previous seasons successes last time out. However, he still managed 12 goals and four assists despite missing around a third of the season through injury.
Ings recorded the eighth best goal per game record among forwards, with 0.41 (although he was only 0.07 less than second place). He also ranked in that position among forwards for goal involvement (42%).
<a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/premier-league-set-piece-takers/">Penalty duties </a>could fall to him or <a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/who-are-the-best-fpl-mid-priced-midfielders/">James Ward-Prowse</a>. Ings also topped the Saints squad charts for shots, shots on target and shots in the box per game.
Of players to have a better goal per game record than Ings, only two had fewer big chances (<a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/premier-league-fantasy-football-tottenham-best-player-tips/">Gareth Bale</a> and <a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/premier-league-fantasy-football-manchester-united-best-player-picks/">Jesse Lingard</a>), highlighting how clinical he is. His xG among those players was also the third lowest.

<h2>Southampton Under the Radar Players &#8211; Fantasy Football Tips</h2>
<h3>Che Adams 
</h3>
He had a better season last time out after failing to impress in his first Premier League campaign. Adams notched nine goals and seven assists in the Premier League.
The Scotsman actually had better underlying <a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/opta/" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c="1" title="FPL Stats by OPTA - Player and Team Stats">stats</a> than Ings on the whole, with a higher xG and big chance tally per game. The same can be said in all creative metrics.
Unfortuantely, Adams’ finishing let him down. He had an expected goal record of 0.35 per game, but only managed 0.25.
Among forwards, Adams created the fourth most big chances per game (0.28), and had the eight best expected goal contribution percentage (39%). Adams’ actual goal contribution was 35%, compared to Ings’ 42%.

<h3>Romain Perraud</h3>
The Frenchman will come straight into the line-up as a replacement for <a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/the-best-leicester-city-fpl-players/">Ryan Bertrand</a>. He managed a very impressive three goals and seven assists for Stade Brest in Ligue 1 last season, all from left back.
That was in a side that narrowly avoided relegation. None of those goals or assists came from <a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/premier-league-set-piece-takers/">set-pieces</a>, and he had the fifth most shots and made the fourth most key passes in the Brest squad.
Hasenhüttl likes to get his full-backs in advanced positions, so Perraud looks like an intriguing pick.

<h3>James Ward-Prowse</h3>
Enjoyed his best season yet in a Saints shirt, marginally missing out on the England squad. Scoring eight and assisting seven, Ward-Prowse was one of only three outfield players to play every single minute of the season.
Given his <a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/premier-league-set-piece-takers/">set-piece</a> expertise, it isn’t exactly surprising that his underlying metrics weren’t excellent. He made the most key passes in the squad (1.58), but only created the seventh most big chances per game (0.08).
Ward-Prowse&#8217;s open play goal threat was pretty marginal, he only registered 0.26 shots in the box and 0.11 big chances per game. These figures ranked only eighth and sixth in the squad respectively.
I cannot underestimate Ward-Prowse’s set piece threat: only one of his eight goals was from open play, three were penalties and four were direct free kicks.

<h3>Stuart Armstrong</h3>
Another Scotsman on this list. Armstrong recorded a decent tally of four goals and seven assists last season, making him fourth in the squad for goal contributions.
Among all Southampton players, Armstrong had the second most shots and made the second most key passes per game.
Those appear quite impressive, but of those 1.67 shots per game, only 0.58 were in the box, and 0.33 were on target. They ranked only fifth and eighth in the squad respectively.
As well as that, despite Armstrong making the second most key passes per game, he only had an expected assist record of 0.11 (fourth in the squad).
He was lucky to almost double that total, with 0.21 assists per appearance. Armstrong’s expected goal contribution was just 13%, yet he managed to be involved in 27% of the sides goals when featuring.
It’s probably slightly unreasonable to expect him to recreate last season’s numbers given those disappointing underlying <a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/opta/">statistics</a>.

One to avoid given his spot is uncertain in the starting eleven and Forster will undoubtedly fill in if McCarthy has a bad game.
