The Best Arsenal FPL Players 2021/22

The best FPL players for Arsenal were a huge disappointment last season. In this article, we examine the best options the Gunners have to offer and whether they are worth considering for our Fantasy Premier League teams.

The Best Arsenal FPL Players 2021/22 | Arsenal in Brief

Arsenal finished eighth in the Premier League for the second season running to cap off another disappointing campaign.

Despite winning their last five matches, the North London club finished six points off the top four and suffered 13 defeats in total.

The Gunners only scored 55 goals which was the joint ninth best in the league along with Aston Villa. Arsenal fared even worse in terms of expected goals (xG), where they were ranked 11th in the division with a figure of 51.55.

Their defensive record was much more impressive, conceding 39 which was the third best of all teams. They also had the fourth highest expected goals conceded with 44.08.

In terms of FPL points, Arsenal players accumulated 1,677 which was the ninth best and higher than the likes of Leicester City.

With 12 clean sheets, Arsenal defenders offered much better value than the midfielders and forwards last season. However, this could change heading into the 2021/22 Premier League campaign.

Mikel Arteta has only made one signing so far but you can expect a summer full of arrivals and departures at the Emirates Stadium.

The Best Leeds United FPL Players 2021/22

The Best Arsenal FPL Players | Nicolas Pépé (MID – £7.5m)

The Ivorian made 29 Premier League appearances last season and played 1,612 minutes. Yet Nicolas Pépé matched Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£10.0m) for output. Pépé only started 16 games but recorded 10 goals and three assists.

He finished as the joint fourth highest scoring player from Arsenal in terms of FPL points (114) along with Bukayo Saka (£6.5m).

With only 4.1% ownership, Pépé could be the ultimate differential from Arsenal. He overperformed his xG (6.35) and xA (2.29) quite considerably.

However, Pépé had impressive underlying numbers with 48 shots and 39 of them were inside the opposition’s box. He also accumulated seven big chances.

His price decrease from £8.0m last year is one to keep an eye on. If Pépé can earn some consistent playing time and gain Arteta’s trust, he could be the best option Arsenal have to offer.

Within the first three Gameweeks, Arsenal rank bottom in terms of match difficulty according to our fixture ticker. After their season opener versus Brentford (a), they face Chelsea (H) and Manchester City (a).

There is a notable fixture swing from Gameweek 4 which lasts until Gameweek 12, with matches against Norwich City (H), Burnley (a), Crystal Palace (H) and Watford (H) where Pépé can do some serious damage.

Who are the Best FPL Budget Midfielders? Gameweek 1

The Best Arsenal FPL Players | Emile Smith Rowe (MID – £5.5m)

The English playmaker had his breakthrough season and filled the creative void which was hindering Arsenal’s progress. Smith Rowe made his Premier League debut in Gameweek 15 versus Chelsea.

In only 18 starts, the Englishman scored two goals and accumulated five assists. What’s more impressive are the underlying statistics, including 12 shots, nine shots in the box and three big chances.

He also created 27 chances and four big chances without assuming set piece duties. He ended the season strongly, with two goals in his last four league games and started the majority of matches despite having to compete with Martin Ødegaard.

The Norwegian attacking midfielder has returned to his parent club, Real Madrid, so Smith Rowe is currently first choice in that position.

As pointed out by our very own Abdul Rehman, I can’t see many better budget midfield options despite his price increase from £4.5m last year.

His playmaking statistics are good, he offers a bit of goal threat and plays alongside talented players such as Aubameyang (£10.0m), Lacazette (£8.5m) and Pépé (£7.5m).

Smith Rowe is yet another differential with 4% ownership and he recently scored in Arsenal’s 2-1 defeat to Hibernian in a pre-season friendly.

Arsenal’s opening fixtures are turbulent as highlighted earlier. It may be prudent to wait until the Norwich match in Gameweek 4 but Smith Rowe has the potential to be a great FPL asset.

Who are the Best FPL Mid-Priced Defenders 2021/22? Gameweek 1

The Best Arsenal FPL Players | Kieran Tierney (DEF – £5.0m)

In only 26 starts last season, Kieran Tierney managed one goal and four assists. The Scotsman had 15 Shots, three shots on target and four shots in the box. He also created 31 chances, including five big chances.

Portuguese left back Nuno Tavares (£4.5m) is Arsenal’s only signing so far this summer. Tierney will still be nailed, but the 21-year-old offers solid cover nonetheless.

Arsenal kept 12 clean sheets, with Tierney forming part of the defence in eight of those. He poses the most threat down that left wing with both goal and assist potential.

The main concern with Tierney is his injury record but the former Celtic defender is a gamechanger for Arsenal when fully fit.

Tierney’s four yellow cards prevented him from reaching triple digits in FPL points for the first time. He scored 96 points to finish as the second highest scoring Arsenal defender. Only Rob Holding (£4.5m) scored more despite Tierney having considerably less minutes.

His ownership is notably higher than the others on this list at 8.8%. Yet the price decrease from £5.5m last year makes him a tempting option and he won’t be in the majority of FPL teams in Gameweek 1.
