The Best Chelsea FPL Players 2021/22 | Chelsea in Brief
Despite losing the FA Cup final to Leicester City, Chelsea reached the summit of European football by lifting the Champions League for the second time.
The Blues won three and lost two of their final five league matches last season.
Over the course of the campaign, they won 19, drew 10 and lost nine games, scoring 58 goals and conceding 36.
Their defensive record was only surpassed by Premier League winners Manchester City, while their goalscoring record was the eighth best of all teams. Thomas Tuchel’s side recorded an expected goals (xG) figure of 71.45.
The underperformance of their xG, when compared to the amount of goals they actually scored, was the third worst in the league. Only the relegated pair of Fulham and Sheffield United had a worse underperformance.
On the other hand, Chelsea’s expected goals conceded (xGC) was 34.84 and almost level with Manchester City’s total of 33.18.
Although there weren’t any standout FPL attacking options in the Chelsea ranks, the Blues produced 1,884 FPL points. This was only topped by, you guessed it, Manchester City.
Chelsea haven’t made any signings so far but it would come as no surprise if they show ambition in the transfer market once more.
The Best Chelsea FPL Players 2021/22 | Kai Havertz (MID – £8.5m)
Kai Havertz made 27 Premier League appearances last season, playing 1512 minutes.
Scorer of the Champions League winning goal, the German international scored four goals and registered six assists in the Premier League.
He also scored three and assisted two in seven Premier League starts under Tuchel.
Excluding the three Chelsea strikers, Havertz had the most shots in the penalty area in the Chelsea squad per 90 minutes.
Looking at all competitions, he scored or assisted every 140 minutes which is an impressive record.
Despite this, he only scored 91 FPL points and was the 11th highest scoring Chelsea player.
He only secured three bonus points across the whole season but Havertz began to show his value towards the end of the season. This stemmed to the European Championships, where he scored twice for Germany.
With 12.3% ownership, Havertz could be one of the best options around his price. His xG (6.43) was the fourth highest in the squad and he had the third most shots on target (16) as well as the fifth most shots in the box (28).
Havertz received 12 big chances in total, scoring three of them and missing nine.
The German attacking midfielder had the 13th highest expected assists (xA) at Chelsea with 2.07 yet recorded six assists. Loftus-Cheek (£5.5m), Marcos Alonso (£5.5m) and Callum Hudson-Odoi (£5.5m) all registered higher xA figures than Havertz.
The Best Chelsea FPL Players 2021/22 | Ben Chilwell (DEF – £6m)
Ben Chilwell is one of the more exciting defenders in the game. This is due to the advanced positions he occupies at left wing back and Chelsea’s sturdy defence.
He scored three and assisted five in 27 league appearences last season. His overall record is seven goals and 14 assists in 126 Premier League matches.
Chelsea kept the second most clean sheets (18), with Chilwell forming part of the backline in nine of them. They conceded 23 goals in this timeframe.
Coming in at 13.6% ownership, Chilwell reached triple digits in FPL points for the third consecutive season.
He was Chelsea’s highest scoring defender last season with 139, and was ranked third amongst the whole squad behind Edouard Mendy (£6.0m) and Mason Mount (£7.5m).
Chilwell gained 11 bonus points which was the fifth most at Chelsea. This is due to a number of key underlying statistics, including the Englishman having the fourth most touches amongst Chelsea players with 2,199.
The 24-year-old also made the second most passes in the final third (490). He is on set pieces but only created two big chances.
Similar to Havertz, there was a significant overperformance in Chilwell’s xA (2.64) with six assists.
Chilwell’s xG (3.22) was representative of his goal tally, with the Englishman receiving four big chances. Out of all Chelsea defenders, he was ranked second for shots in the box (22), only behind Kurt Zouma (£5.5m).
It may be worth waiting on Chelsea defenders until the fixture swing in Gameweek 7 when they have a great set of matches until Gameweek 12.
The Best Chelsea FPL Players 2021/22 | Mason Mount (MID – £7.5m)
Mason Mount was the highest scoring Chelsea player in terms of FPL points (147) but it’s worth noting that he also had the most minutes (2,892).
He finished with the highest expected points (177.2) according to our FPL predictor model.
There are many reasons why he is the highest owned player in this list with 20.9% ownership. The Chelsea academy graduate scored six goals and accumulated seven FPL assists.
He’s also on a fair share of set-pieces and can play in central midfield or across the front three. This makes him one of the most nailed Chelsea assets which is rare given Tuchel’s tendency to rotate his squad quite heavily.
Although Mount only scored four goals and assisted twice in 14 Premier League starts under Tuchel, his underlying statistics are thoroughly impressive.
He made the most appearances (36), had the most shots (82), had the second most shots on target (27) as well as the second most shots in the box (36) for the Blues.
It doesn’t end there, with Mount receiving seven big chances, possessing the second highest xG (7.63) and being the joint second highest scorer.
His creativity will undoubtedly be the main source of his points, as Mount created the most big chances (15) for Chelsea, while recording the highest xA (10.63).
The England midfielder made the most key passes (87) as well as the second most in the entire league. Only the FPL points machine Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) beat Mount to top spot in this category.
If he can sustain, or even improve upon his goal threat and creative numbers, there’s no reason why the Chelsea man can’t improve upon his points tally this season.
