The £4.5m midfielders is not the most exciting category but shouldn't be ignored nonetheless. Just like the budget goalkeeper position, the fifth midfielder option is often overlooked in Fantasy Premier League.
It’s a rare occurrence that they will ever be needed but it’s good to have a solid starter to be well prepared. Underlying attacking statistics are not the main focus when selecting your budget midfielder. Security of starts is undoubtedly the most crucial factor.
The Best £4.5m Midfielders in FPL
Yves Bissouma (£4.5m) – Brighton
Bissouma plays as a defensive and central midfielder. The Malian racked up the most minutes (3,111) last season from all the £4.5m midfielders and posted some fairly good numbers for a budget midfielder. In 35 starts he managed 42 Shots, 3 Shots on Target, 7 Shots in the Box and also created 16 Chances and 1 Big Chance.
He has scored a solitary goal in each of his last two seasons, including a stunner against Everton at Goodison Park in the last campaign. Bissouma loves a shot and had the most shots on goal from all the £4.5 midfielders.
The Brighton midfielder is a perfect bench player for our FPL squads and when needed, he will probably get you a solid two or three points. His security of starts means he is a great bench option and he will likely not change in price too much.
Billy Gilmour (£4.5m) – Norwich City
The Chelsea midfielder has been loaned out to Norwich for the season and should be another nailed starter. The talented youngster has only played 11 senior games for the Blues and this loan spell could provide the Scotsman the platform he needs to grow.
He is clearly a talented player but has no chance of a starting berth in a stacked Chelsea team full of top-class talent. We don’t know much about his attacking threat, or his exact role for Norwich, but he has clearly been bought in as a first-team player.
From the £4.5m bench fodder options he is as good as it gets. He plays a central or defensive midfielder and could surprise us Fantasy managers this season.
Lukas Rupp (£4.5m) – Norwich City
Norwich City provide us with another £4.5m midfielder in Lukas Rupp who could be one of the surprise packages. He was getting some minutes in the second half of the campaign and even picked up three assists but a hamstring injury cut his season short.
Rupp is definitely one to watch out for in pre-season. He is not guaranteed starts by any stretch of the imagination but if he can cement his place in the starting line up, then he is the best £4.5m FPL midfielder from an attacking perspective.
The German winger has 40 goals and 29 assists in 335 senior games so he's very promising for a bench fodder option.
Josh Brownhill (£4.5m) – Burnley
The Burnley midfielder had 32 starts last season and played 2814 minutes which was only bettered by Bissouma from the £4.5m midfielder options. An ankle injury kept Brownhill out for three games also.
He only picked up one assist and registered 34 Shots, 7 Shots in the Box. 13 Shots in the Box and created 19 Chances.
Brownhill is a versatile player and can play on the right and centre of midfield. He has also been deployed in more advanced positions.
I like Brownhill because I believe he will play the majority of games. He is also on some direct free kicks and was unfortunate not to pick up more attacking returns. Our OPTA stats tool tells us he had an xG of 1.65 and an xA of 1.49.
I can definitely see him picking up more goals and assists this time round.
Douglas Luiz (£4.5m) – Aston Villa
Douglas Luiz played the third most minutes (2781) from the £4.5m midfielders with 32 starts. He also picked up two assists with 26 Shots, 8 Shots on Target, 5 Shots in the Box and 1 Big Chances while also creating 19 Chances and 4 Big Chances.
Although he's predominantly deployed as a defensive midfielder, Luiz has good attacking statistics for his price. He is another one who should have picked up more attacking returns last season with an xG of 1.60 and xA of 2,46.
In the 2019/20 season, the Brazilian international notched three goals and two assists from defensive midfield.
Luiz is another option who should get sufficient minutes and is undoubtedly one of the best £4.5m midfielders.
The Best of the Rest £4.5m FPL Midfielders
Oriol Romeu should be good for 30 starts or more. He missed a significant chunk of last season through injury but made a cameo on the bench in Gameweek 38. In only 21 starts, he scored one goal and provided an assist with 14 Shots, 4 Shots on Target, 3 Shots in the Box while also creating 14 Chances and 3 Big Chances.
He has scored a goal in all but one of his last six seasons. He is another one to keep an eye out for in pre-season.
Allan has been classified as £4.5m midfielder, a full £1m less than last season. The Brazilian is another one who had his season curtailed through injury but started and played every minute of his last eight league games.
Although he is yet to register a single attacking return for Everton, Allan managed 12 goals and 27 assists in 262 games for Napoli and Udinese in Serie A.
We don’t know precisely how Rafael Benítez will deploy Allan but he is one to watch out for as he clearly possesses an attacking threat.
