Brentford stats and best players
Brentford's third season in the Premier League saw them finish in their lowest position yet.
It was not the loss of talisman Ivan Toney for half the season which was at fault though, as many might expect.
The Bees posted near-identical attacking stats to the 2022/23 season, when they finished ninth.
They scored two fewer goals (56) and their expected goals (xG) tally of 59.93 was 0.87 better.
But there was a big difference at the other end of the pitch, where injuries, individual errors and the loss of the reliable David Raya affected them. Thomas Frank remarked at one point:
“We are normally good at defending but in spells this season, we have made too many mistakes."
While in 2022/23 their goals conceded was joint-fifth best and their xGC worse (13th), the situation flipped in 2023/24.
It was their xGC which was top-six worthy - but what really mattered was their actual goals conceded.
They conceded 65 goals, with only six teams letting more goals in. It ultimately led them to finishing just 13 points clear of relegated Luton.

With Toney banned until January after breaching FA betting rules, Brentford needed someone to step up in his place.
But rather than panicking in the transfer market, Thomas Frank put his trust in existing players.
Bryan Mbeumo was one of the stars of the league in the early stages, let alone among his teammates. He scored seven and assisted four in 15 games before an ankle injury in December kept him out until March.
The Cameroon international, who missed the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), was on penalties in Toney's absence. He finished on nine goals and seven assists in 25 appearances.
Yoane Wissa top scored with 12, while Toney managing four goals and three assists upon his return. The returning striker last scored a club goal back in February however.
