Burnley bounced back from relegation to secure promotion from the Championship at the first time of asking &#8211; here, we preview their FPL and wider fantasy football prospects for the 2023/24 season.
Managed by former Manchester City defender Vincent Kompany, the Clarets play a completely different style of football than previously under Sean Dyche.
We take a look at their 2022/23 season and star players, predicted starting 11 and set-piece takers. There&#8217;s also insight from Burnley fan Jimmy the Claret &#8211; follow him on <a href="https://twitter.com/ClaretFPL">Twitter</a>.

<h2>Burnley stats and best players</h2>
Burnley topped the Championship with 101 points &#8211; the biggest total since Leicester&#8217;s 102 in the 2013/14 season.
The Clarets scored more goals than any other team, although their 87 was some way short of Fulham&#8217;s 106 in the previous Championship season.
According to <a href="https://fbref.com/en/comps/10/Championship-Stats">FBref data</a>, their attacking returns significantly outperformed their expected goals (xG), which at 66.2 was only good enough for third best behind Sheffield United and Middlesbrough. No side had a wider gap between their goals scored and xG.
Burnley led the way at the other end of the pitch. They conceded 35 times, keeping 21 clean sheets. It was only during the playoffs that Coventry were able to beat their total.
The difference between their goals conceded and expected goals conceded was much tighter than their attacking numbers. They conceded 35 against an xGC of 38.2.
<h3>2022/23 season best players</h3>
Southampton loanee Nathan Tella was the Clarets&#8217; top scorer, with 17 goals, six ahead of Manuel Benson on 11 and Jay Rodriguez on 10.
Tella&#8217;s total, against an xG of 10.3, was fifth best in the league, showing Burnley were not reliant on a single talisman.
Equally, the assists were shared around the team. Josh Brownhill returned eight, with Anass Zaroury, Johann Berg Gudmundsson and full-backs Ian Maatsen and Connor Roberts all tied on six.
Loan signings like Tella were key to Burnley&#8217;s success. Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Jordan Beyer were critical parts of the defence alongside Maatsen from Chelsea.
But shrewd signings Zaroury, Benson and Josh Cullen were recruited from Kompany&#8217;s home country of Belgium and the trio will be important players in the Premier League.

<h2>What is Burnley&#8217;s style of play under Kompany?</h2>
Burnley&#8217;s style of play is much changed from the Dyche era that fantasy fans grew used to.
It is now much more comparable to Manchester City, with Kompany preferring a possession-based approach.
They averaged around 61% possession in the Championship &#8211; approximately 25% higher than their last year in the Premier League.
A 4-2-3-1 formation was the go-to system, however Kompany can change things up depending on the opposition.
Burnley fan <a href="https://twitter.com/ClaretFPL">Jimmy the Claret</a> said the preferred choice this season could change depending on who comes into the squad. He said:
<blockquote>&#8220;It depends on signings and which loan players stay but if we sign an out-and-out striker, I can see 4-1-4-1 being regularly used. If not, it&#8217;ll be 4-2-3-1 with a lot of fluidity among the attacking players.&#8221;</blockquote>
Burnley&#8217;s tactics could make their full-backs viable fantasy options.
Roberts and Maatsen both contributed four goals and six assists last season.
Kompany is a fan of inverting his full-backs, seeing them push into midfield similar to John Stones and Trent Alexander-Arnold for City and Liverpool.
He has has asked different things of them at different times though, as the Athletic highlighted on their piece on <a href="https://theathletic.com/4582031/2023/06/06/maatsen-burnley-chelsea/">Maatsen</a> recently:
<blockquote>&#8220;Maatsen’s role changed throughout the 2022-23 season. Early on, he was asked to push extremely high on the left; later in the season, he dropped deeper into the in-possession back three that Burnley used when they switched to their inverted full-back style.&#8221;</blockquote>
Roberts as a result had more attacking returns in the second half of the season.

<h2>Burnley predicted lineup for FPL Gameweek 1</h2>
There are a number of unknowns in regards to Burnley&#8217;s starting 11. A difficult away trip to Manchester City and a <a href="https://www.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/fpl-blank-double-gameweek-guide">Gameweek 2 blank</a> in addition may deter fantasy managers from loading up on Clarets for the time being.

In goal, Arijanet Muric has major competition from James Trafford, who signed from Manchester City.
Muric kept a clean sheet against Benfica in pre-season and may get the initial nod, however long-term clarity should deter fantasy managers ahead of Gameweek 1. Kompany could however offer insight in his Gameweek 1 pre-match press conference.
In defence, Roberts and Beyer are likely to line up in defence but there is further uncertainty across the back line.
Maatsen has heavily featured for Chelsea in pre-season, so looks unlikely to return to Turf Moor as things stand. Charlie Taylor could be the left-back then, although Ameen Al-Dakhil was used as an experimental inverted left-back in one friendly. Owen Dodgson, 20, is another alternative.
At right-back, Vitinho is a versatile player who could feature at times.
Al-Dakhil has been a regular in pre-season and could get the nod over Hjalmar Ekdal or Dara O&#8217;Shea in central defence.
Josh Cullen and Jack Cork could start in central midfield. Cullen played the friendly against Genk on July 22 but was not part of the next two friendlies. There has been no word over an injury at the time of writing however.
Further forward, Brownhill thrived in a more attacking role last season and could start the season in an advanced position once again.
On the wings, Kompany has plenty of options.
Tella has been linked with a return to Burnley all season but a move has yet to transpire. Andros Townsend has featured as a trialist in three friendlies and was close to a permanent contract.
Townsend and Nathan Redmond offer vital Premier League experience and this could be the way Kompany goes for the visit to champions City.
Zaroury is expected to be a first-team regular out wide, as is Benson. The latter has not featured in recent pre-season games, which raises concerns and is something to keep an eye out for in Kompany&#8217;s press conference.
Up front, Kompany has the choice between top-flight experience in Jay Rodriguez and new boy Zeki Amdouni.
The Swiss international, 22, scored 12 goals in the Swiss Super League last season and was the joint-top scorer in the Europa Conference League, with seven goals.
Lyle Foster has played the most pre-season minutes up front with one friendly to go.
Wout Weghorst remains on the scene, despite rumours of a transfer away from Turf Moor.

<h3>Jimmy on pre-season preparations</h3>
Burnley fan Jimmy said pre-season has been an experimental one for Kompany:
<blockquote>&#8220;Kompany is using pre-season not just to test out various combinations and options as many managers do, but he&#8217;s also testing how flexible and adaptable the squad is to playing with different combinations of teammates.
&#8220;Essentially he&#8217;s testing how well the system will hold up and adapt upon rotation, especially within the more attacking members of the squad.
&#8220;We finally, for the first time in abotu 10 years, have options off the bench so expect substitutions if needed in order to bring a new flavour to the side, within his overall framework of occupying attacking spaces when they become available.&#8221;</blockquote>
