Crystal Palace 2020/21 Season Summary – Fantasy Football Tips

Crystal Palace ended another Premier League season without entering a relegation fight or seriously challenging for a top half finish.

That perfectly sums up where they are as a club, and it does seem satisfactory to the board. Roy Hodgson’s pragmatic approach did its job once again, but not as smoothly as seasons gone by.

Palace conceded less than only two teams, and that was with a defensive minded manager.

Patrick Vieira coming in could damage that record even more, but the arrivals of Marc Guehi and Joakim Anderson will balance that out.

They also conceded four or more on five occasions (all against the ‘big six’ sides), including an embarrassing 7-0 loss to Liverpool.

If Viera goes into these types of games with a possession based style, it could end in disaster. We saw it with Leeds last season (who eventually became more conservative).

Leeds‘ system was tried and tested by one of the worlds best tacticians in Marcelo Bielsa. If Palace approach next season this way, I don’t think it will end well.

Attacking wise, Palace always provide huge threat on the counter with the likes of Eberechi Eze and Wilfred Zaha.

However, only two teams had fewer big chances, shots and a lower xG, and only three teams had fewer shots on target in the last campaign.

Despite that, Palace scored more than six teams, so they will need to keep up that clinical edge.

Crystal Palace 2021/22 Season Expectations – Fantasy Football Tips

We can almost ignore last season’s results due to the fact that Palace’s style will be transformed by Vieira.

The signings of Andersen, Guehi, Conor Gallagher and Michael Olise are all exciting, much like the tactics that are expected to be employed.

They are also risky transfers just like the appointment of their manager. All four players come in from relegated teams or the Championship, so it doesn’t make the Eagles susceptible from a relegation scrap.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Vieira’s style be almost abundantly expressive. Given the early series of tough fixtures, it doesn’t look good on paper.

Palace are quite harsh to their managers so Vieira looks quite a good bet to be the first sacked gaffer. However, I think Palace will have enough to survive quite comfortably and perhaps aim for a top half finish.

Crystal Palace Expected Lineup

Sky Fantasy Crystal Palace

Vicente Guaita should be preferred to Jack Butland between the sticks.

The two centrebacks should consist of newcomers Andersen and Guehi, with Tyrick Mitchell now nailed at left back following the departure of Patrick Van Aanholt.

Joel Ward should be favoured over Nathaniel Clyne, although that spot will be hotly contested.

Chiekhou Kouyate went under the radar with his good performances last season and should be given the role of shielding the defence.

Jairo Riedewald has impressed Vieira so should start ahead of Luka Milivojevic, James McCarthur and Jeffrey Schlupp.

Gallagher joins the fold on loan from Chelsea after impressing in his loan spell at West Brom last season. He should slot straight into central midfield.

Zaha is the first name on the team sheet, and will play in his preferred left-wing role.

Olise and Eze are out injured, with the former out until September and Eze out until at least December.

I’d expect Olise to come into the line-up at right wing when fit, but Palace will have to settle with Jordan Ayew there for now.

Jean Phillipe Mateta could be given the chance over Christian Benteke, but for now it seems the spot will be the Belgian’s.

Crystal Palace Best Players – Fantasy Football Tips

Wilfred Zaha

Recorded his best goal tally last season, scoring 11 league goals as well as assisting four. He should be the main penalty taker, given that Milivojevic should see fewer minutes and Zaha offers the most open play goal threat.

He had the most big chances per game in the squad (0.37), scored the most goals per game (0.37) and was directly involved in the most goals when on the pitch (38%).

The Ivorian also had the highest expected assist record per game at Palace, with 0.16. His goal involvement contribution was the eighth best among Fantasy midfielders.

Zaha also had the sixth most shots in the box per game among midfielders (1.53).

With Palace set to play more expansive football, Zaha should receive more chances and I don’t expect his goal contribution percentage to decrease. I wouldn’t be surprised to see this be his best season yet in a Palace shirt.

The Best Crystal Palace FPL Players 2021/22

Crystal Palace Under the Radar Players – Fantasy Football Tips

Christian Benteke

The former Aston Villa striker had quite a turbulent spell since joining Palace in 2016. Last season was his best goal return since 2016/17, scoring 10 in less than 2000 minutes.

Interestingly, Benteke had the third most shots on target per start of all players in the league, as well as the most shots in the box.

He scored 0.43 goals per start, which was the same as Patrick Bamford. This figure was also better than the likes of Danny Ings, Michail Antonio, Gabriel Jesus, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Edinson Cavani and Ollie Watkins.

Benteke was involved in the highest percentage of Palace goals when he started (46%). In comparison, Zaha was involved in 39%.

With Palace playing far more expansively under their new manager, Benteke should be on the end of more chances. I think he will be a good option should he be prefered to Mateta.

It has been confirmed by Vieira that Mitchell will be given far more freedom in his new role, with the license to bomb forward.

Mitchell managed just a single goal and assist last season, which isn’t much to go off. However, Vieira’s comments increase Mitchell’s appeal dramatically, and he is now the stand-out defender in the side.

Crystal Palace Players to Avoid – Fantasy Football Tips

Vicente Guaita

I think we should avoid the Spaniard. I don’t think the Vieira appointment bodes too well for Palace defensively, and the chances they concede are substantial, given their new possession-based style.

Goalkeepers that play in defensive sides are far more appealing than Guaita because their defence attracts more shots from out of the box.
