Route from qualification

Netherlands finished behind Germany in their qualifying group to qualify without the need for a play-off. Of their eight games, they won six, drew one and lost one, losing to Germany and drawing to Northern Ireland.

They scored 24 goals and conceded seven. Their goal-scoring tally was bettered by only Germany and England (of the teams who played eight games).

Since qualifying, the Dutch finished second in their top-tier group of the Nation’s League, beaten to the top spot by Italy by just a point. They drew 1-1 and lost 1-0 to Italy, and their other dropped points were in a 0-0 draw away in Bosnia.

They managed two clean sheets and scored seven goals. This year, they started by losing 4-2 to Turkey before somewhat making with a 2-0 win against Latvia and a 7-0 drubbing of Gibraltar.

Their form is mixed. They aren’t the side they were 10 or so years ago, but they have the quality to win their group. I think they’ll pip Ukraine to top spot.

Netherlands Euro 2020 Expected lineup

                                         Krul

Dumfries – Timber – de Ligt – de Vrij – Wijndal

            Wijnaldum – F.De Jong – De Roon

                             Weghorst – Depay

Tim Krul should start ahead of Martin Stekelenburg between the posts. Tim Krul has deputised for first-choice Cillessen in the last six international matches whilst Cillessen nursed an injury. Cillessen has been ruled out of the Championships following a positive Covid test.

Matthijs de Ligt is the only certainty in the back three, after Virgil Van Dijk ruled himself out of the competition. I expect Stefan de Vrij and Jurrien Timber to partner next to him, after strong domestic seasons. Daley Blind could come in for de Vrij.

Owen Wijndal and Denzel Dumfries will be the wing-backs.

Frenkie de Jong and Georginio Wijnaldum are nailed-on starters in the midfield three, with the latter playing a more advanced role to his one for Liverpool. I expect Marten de Roon to take the final midfield spot over Davy Klaasen.

Wout Weghorst will partner Memphis Depay up top.

Euro 2020 Team Preview – Netherlands

Netherlands Euro 2020 Best player pick:

Penalty-taker Memphis Depay is joint top scorer with captain Georginio Wijnaldum in this season’s international campaign. The former has 19 goals and 10 assists in Ligue 1, four goals and two assists in his last five Dutch starts, and scored six and assisted eight in less than 500 minutes in qualifying.

Wijnaldum was top-scorer in qualifying, with eight goals and three assists in seven starts.

Under the radar players

Wout Weghorst has only recently broken into Dutch side. He scored in the final friendly vs Georgia and scored an impressive 25 goals and nine assists for Wolfsburg. Furthermore, he should be available at a kind price point.

Attacking minded right-back Densel Dumfries is a nice pick should he cement his place, given he has two goals and six  assists in the league this season and two assists for his country this campaign.

Similarly, Owen Wijndal plays in an advanced position and scored twice and assisted six for AZ Alkmaar this season.

Matthijs de Ligt and Stefan de Vrij don’t have the same attacking potential, despite their threat from set-pieces. I do prefer de Ligt for his security of the starting place.

Tim Krul looks set to start in-between the sticks and could be available at a nice price. I’m not sure about the Dutch’s defensive capabilities however, and they recently conceded four to Turkey.

Players to avoid:

Also avoid Frenkie de Jong, who despite being a fantastic footballer isn’t a fantasy option. I’m also not sold on Marten de Roon’s Fantasy prospects.
