Route from qualification

Portugal made qualification hard for themselves, finishing second in a group with the likes of Serbia and Ukraine. However, they still managed to tally 22 goals in eight games: a record only beaten by four of the 24 other teams to play eight qualifying matches. They kept four clean sheets – which was neither outstanding nor particularly bad.

They finished second in their Nations League A group behind France. They only dropped points twice in the six games; a draw and loss to France. However, they scored twelve (only bettered by Belgium and Spain in League A), and kept three clean sheets.

This year, Portugal have been somewhat shaky, squeezing past Azerbaijan at home 1-0, followed by a disappointing draw in Serbia and an underwhelming 3-1 win in Luxembourg. The latter actually saw the minnows go 1-0 up!

Portugal’s results are quite mediocre, but I still think they are a force to be reckoned with. They will score goals and have a solid defence to boot.

An exit before the semi-final would be a disappointment with the selection of talent they boast, and I think they’ll finish anywhere between the semis and lifting the trophy for what would be a consecutive championship.

Euro 2020 Portugal expected lineup

                          Patricio

Cancelo – Dias – Pepe – Guerreiro

                Pereira – Carvalho

    B.Silva – B.Fernandes – Jota

                         Ronaldo

Rui Patricio should be the starting goalkeeper, despite a close battle with Anthony Lopes.

Rafael Guerreiro is the only major uncertainty in the back four, after the breakthrough of teenager Nuno Mendes.

The midfield spot next to Danilo Pereira is the toughest space to call in the line-up. Any one of Sergio Oliveira, William Carvalho, Joao Moutinho and Ruben Neves could make that spot their own. Luckily for us, none of these are inspiring fantasy options.

The final uncertainty in the starting 11 is the left-wing spot. Diogo Jota seems likely to start, but could rotate with Joao Felix.

Euro 2020 Fantasy Football Tips – Portugal

Euro 2020 best player picks:

Cristiano Ronaldo hasn’t showed many signs of slowing down. He scored 11 in eight qualifying starts, has four goals this international campaign and takes the penalties and direct free-kicks. Moreover, he is a big-game player. I don’t need to say much more.

Diogo Jota looks likely to start on the wide-left berth and is the Portuguese’s top scorer this international season, with six goals in just over 500 minutes of football. He has also scored three in the last two national games, including a brace against Serbia. After the form he has been showing for club and country, it seems unlikely he’d be dropped, even for the talent that is Joao Felix.

Attacking-minded full-back Joao Cancelo is the best defensive pick. He has a goal and an assist in this international campaign, as well as three goals and five assists for Manchester City this season. He is a certain starter as well.

Under the radar players:

Veteran Pepe would be my second choice defensive option. He is basically nailed-on to start and will be cheaper than partner Ruben Dias, despite providing very similar set-piece threat. Ruben Dias is of course a good option, but saving budget by going with Pepe would be a wise move.

Bernardo Silva is an ever-present starter in the Portuguese set-up. He was involved in the second-most goals in qualifying, with three goals and six assists. His goal involvement has dried up a bit of late however, with only two Premier League goals and a single goal and three assists in eleven Portuguese caps this season.

That all being said, I still like the look of him as an option: he is a nailed starter in a fantastic side, he is a brilliant player and he gets a good share of indirect set-pieces.

Players to avoid:

Bruno Fernandes will be one of the most-expensive midfield options in the game. Despite that, he only has two goals in 27 caps, and has just the single assist in his last eight international appearances. Crucially, he isn’t Portugal’s penalty taker: 13 of his 28 goals this season were penalties, and unlike at Manchester United, he isn’t the focal point in attack.

Moreover, he often finds himself in deeper roles for country. He does get a share of some of the set-pieces, but that doesn’t justify paying a huge lump of cash for him in my opinion.

Avoid all of the holding midfielders. Only Danilo Pereira is nailed-on to start and none of the options provide any genuine goal-threat.

I would also stay clear of the two goalkeepers. Although I put Rui Patricio in my starting eleven, Anthony Lopes has played quite a lot of international minutes lately, and Pepe, Dias and Cancelo are all better defensive options.

The left-back spot is another spot of uncertainty. Rafael Guerreiro and Nuno Mendes fight for that spot, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see rotation. It’s a shame neither are nailed; Guerreiro has six goals and 11 assists for Borrusia Dortmund this season and Mendes is available at a bargain price.
