Route from qualification:

Sweden finished behind Spain in their qualification table, qualifying without the need for a play-off.

They only lost once (to Spain), scored 23 and conceded nine in their ten games. Their goal-scoring tally was slightly above average compared to other qualified teams, whereas their defensive record was slightly below.

It is worth mentioning that they held Spain to a 1-1 draw in Stockholm, showing they could do it again. Defensively, they kept five clean sheets (albeit against very weak opposition: Faroe Islands, Romania and Malta).

In the Nations League 2020 campaign, the Swedes finished bottom of their top-tiered group. They were in arguably the toughest group, with Croatia, Portugal and France. They failed to score in half of the games and conceded two or more in four of the six ties. Their only win was a 2-1 home win to Croatia and lost all other encounters.

Since then, Sweden beat both Georgia and Kosovo in World Cup qualifying.

Despite their dreadful Nations League campaign, I still expect Sweden to comfortably reach the last 16. However, I think they would rely on a kind draw to get past that stage. Moreover, their defence isn’t as strong as it was in the the World Cup, but I think they should keep at least one clean sheet in the group.

Euro 2020 Sweden expected lineup

                                 Olsen

Lustig – Lindelof – Danielson – Augustinsson

       Larsen – Ekdal – Olsson – Forsberg

                       Isak – Kulusevski

There are three players whose spots aren’t secure. Those are those of Sebastien Larsen, Marcus Danielson and Dejan Kulusevski. That being said, Kulusevski is ruled out of Matchday 1 after a positive covid-19 test. Marcus Berg will therefore step in for him.

Danielson should start over Pontus Jansson and Filip Helander.

Larsen is likely to be favoured to Viktor Claesson and Marcus Berg (which would push Kulusevski out to the right), whilst Kulusevski should also be preferred to the latter two.

Euro 2020 Sweden Tips

The Swedish National Team

Euro 2020 best player picks:

Young forward Alexander Isak has 16 La Liga goals this season, as well as five goals in 20 Swedish caps. His height makes him a threat from set-pieces and he’s capable of going on long-scoring runs. He was second in the goalscoring charts in the sides’ qualifying campaign, after notching three in 10 appearances.

It is definitely worth noting that seven of these came off the bench though, and he’s broken into the starting eleven since.

Emil Forsberg is given a free-role and will take set-pieces and maybe penalties. His set-piece role could be key given the height of side. He certainly is a key player and most of the Swede’s attacks come through him.

However, he only scored once and assisted twice in seven qualifying starts. On the other hand, at club RB Leipzig, he has a respectable nine goals and six assists this season. He is also likely to be the penalty taker, and scored and assisted in the final preparation match against Armenia.

Full-backs Ludwig Augustinsson and Mikael Lustig have recently been given more of a licence to maraud forward. Augustinsson’s new tactical role resulted in a goal in his last cap, but he has missed the majority of recent internationals through injury.

In addition, he has six assists in 28 domestic appearances this season. Lustig assisted once in qualifying and has notched an assist since. Of the two, I prefer Augustinsson. He is the most appealing Swedish asset in my opinion.

Swedish critics are expecting the side to play with a more conservative approach after their unsuccessful Nations League result.

Under the radar players:

Isak’s Matchday 1 forward partner Marcus Berg has 12 goals and five assists in domestic competitions this season, as well as two goals internationally. He was one of the main goal contributors in qualifying, despite only chipping in with two goals and three assists after starting eight of the 10 encounters.

Another point worth mentioning is that he started each of Sweden’s five World Cup games, failing to score.

Goalkeeper Robin Olsen has the potential to be a cheap enabler. I think he will have plenty of saves to make in the opener vs Spain, and should Sweden ride a bit of luck, there is a decent clean sheet potential given Spain’s inability to defeat defensive sides.

Juventus’ highly rated winger Dejan Kulusevski has seven goals and seven assists in all competitions this season. Moreover, he has the potential to feature in the front two. In his eleven caps, he has just the single goal. However, he is ruled out of the first game after a positive Covid-19 test.

Should Marcus Danielson start against Spain, he is a tempting option. He is a massive threat from set-pieces as shown by his two goals in five Chinese Super League starts this season, and three goals in only nine caps. Moreover, he should be the cheapest asset of the back four.

Players to avoid:

Due to the lack of attacking threat of Victor Lindelof compared to full-backs and Danielson, there is little point in owning him, especially given he is likely to be more expensive.

Sebastien Larsen, Kristoffer Olsson and Albin Ekdal are unlikely to be goal-scoring threats.
