Route from qualification

Turkey qualified automatically from their group, featuring the likes of France, Iceland and Albania, only losing once and taking four of a possible six points off World Champions France.

They only conceded 3 goals during qualifying which no European side could better. That being said, Turkey have only kept one clean sheet in their last nine games.

This year, they have beat Netherlands 4-2 and Norway 3-0 in their World Cup qualification group, before a 3-3 encounter with Turkey. They also drew 3-3 to Germany & Croatia in 2020 friendlies. Moreover, they have scored three or more goals in six of their last nine games (including vs Germany, Holland, Russia & Croatia). I definitely see them progressing from the group.

They are a worthy dark horse in my eyes, and I can see them making it as far as the semi finals. The amount of goals they have shown they can score, and the quality of defenders in their side make them an exciting prospect.

Turkey Euro 2020 Expected Lineup

I expect them to line up in a 4-1-4-1 formation like so:

   Çelik Demiral Söyüncü Meras

 Yazici Calhanoglu Tufan Karaman

Caglar Soyuncu should pip Ozan Kabak to the centre back spot next to Merih Demiral. Winger Yusuf Yazici looks like he will start over Cengiz Under, who has had a difficult season for Leicester.

Euro 2020 fantasy football tips – Turkey

Turkey Euro 2020 Best player picks:

Captain and veteran Burak Yilmaz is an exciting pick. He scored a hat-trick against Holland in the last international break and has 15 goals in Ligue 1 this season. He also has 28 goals in 66 caps.

He has plenty of experience to perform on the big stage and is the penalty and direct free-kick taker to boot.

Yilmaz alternative:

Hakan Calhanoglu is the go-to option in the Turkish midfield. He is arguably their best player and has three goals and four assists this season for Turkey (in eight starts), which is the most goal involvements in the Turkish side.

He has lots of assist potential as he is on all indirect set-pieces and has 10 assists for AC Milan in Serie A this campaign. He also has two goals and three assists in his last three Turkish starts.

Furthermore, he has the most key passes in Europe’s top 5 leagues this season.

Turkey Euro 2020 Under the radar players

Zeki Çelik is a decent budget defender shout; he has three goals and three assists this season for Lille. He also has two goals in a Turkish shirt and is nailed for the right-back spot.

However, Turkey have only kept two clean sheets in their last 11 matches since qualification. Furthermore, they have conceded two or more in seven of those 11 encounters.

The inconsistency of Turkey’s defensive form makes their defensive options difficult to go near at the moment. That being said, a good performance in their opener vs Italy make the likes of Celik and his defensive colleagues fine options for their ties against Switzerland and Wales.

Ozan Tufan is also good option as a budget enabler. He is Turkey’s joint top scorer this season (with four goals). For his club Fenerbache, he has six goals and nine assists this season. It is worth mentioning that he loves a strike from long distance.

Left winger Kenan Karaman is also an interesting pick. He plays in the second tier of German football where he has seven goals in 25 matches this season. He also has four goals and an assist in last eight international appearances, which is joint most.

Yusuf Yazici has 7 goals for Lille in Ligue 1 this season, as well as a further 7 in the Europa League, and gets a share of set-pieces with Calhanoglu and Yilmaz, his club teammate. In addition, he plays almost as a striker, and has formed a lethal partnership with Yilmaz both domestically and internationally. He also gets a share of set-pieces.

An interesting stat – he scored a hat-trick in this season’s Europa League tie away at AC Milan; can he do again against the Italians in the competition’s opener? However, he will be prone to early substitution because of the competition from Leicester winger Cengiz Under.

Left-back Umat Meras looks to have solidified his spot at left-back, following the absence of Caner Erkin, but his spot is less secure than Celik, and he offers less attacking threat.

Turkey Euro 2020 Players to avoid:

Avoid the centre backs of Ozan Kabak, Caglar Soyuncu, Merih Demiral, who don’t offer enough attacking threat compared to Meras and Celik.

Moreover, don’t consider West Brom’s holding midfielder Okay Yokuslu, who offers little-to-no attacking threat.
