Gameweek 8 FPL Differentials

The Defender Differential – Van Aanholt £5.4m, 5.4% owned

Patrick Van Aanholt has missed the beginning of the Premier League season due to injury which has seen his price fall by £0.1m and his ownership sit at just 5.4%. However, having returned to the starting lineup for Crystal Palace, Van Aanholt has put forward some strong attacking numbers that could make the Dutch defender an appealing differential. In his most recent start against Wolves, Van Aanholt made 21 passes in the final third, 19 of which were successful. This was the highest out of any defender that should regularly start of their team and is only ranked behind Fernandinho and Fosu-Mensah overall. This led to him providing an assist to Batshuayi which was then ruled out for marginal offside.

Van Aanholt is back in the Crystal Palace starting XI ahead of a run of great fuxtures

Last season, Van Aanholt returned five attacking returns from 29 starts, averaging one every six games and only Zaha and Ayew had more attacking returns in the Crystal Palace team during the whole of last season. However, Van Aanholt also returned eight clean sheets which gave him 13 returns for the season from 29 starts, more than any other Crystal Palace player.

Crystal Palace players – Points per Start 2019/20 season.

In addition, Crystal Palace rank first on the Hub’s Fixture Ticker for the next five Gameweeks. This includes home fixtures against Leeds, Newcastle and Tottenham as well as away fixtures to Burnley and West Brom. Crystal Palace have not been as strong defensively so far this season despite keeping 10 clean sheets last season but this favourable run of fixtures could offer  Crystal Palace a strong opportunity to improve on this. If Van Aanholt can take advantage of these fixtures with his attacking and creative threat, the Dutchman could be a high-scoring differential over the coming Gameweeks.

The Midfielder Differential – Jarrod Bowen – £6.3m, 2.2% owned

Fixture-wise, West Ham have had a difficult start to the season, however they have still managed to perform picking up eight points from their opening seven games and scoring almost two goals on average per game despite playing Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham,  Manchester City and Wolves. From Gameweek 8, using the Hub’s Fixture Ticker, we can see West Ham have the second easiest run of fixtures over the next five Gameweeks with fixtures against Fulham, Sheffield United, Aston Villa, Manchester United and Leeds. Given the difficult start to the season, West Ham assets saw their ownership remain low, however, given they still returned good fantasy points, they could offer strong differentials over the current weeks.

Jarrod Bowen has shone for West Ham so far this season

The differential picked from West Ham is Bowen who is the second-highest scoring West Ham player with 4.71 points per game, only behind Spanish midfielder Fornals. However, using the creativity statistics on the OPTA stats tool, Bowen has an average of four crosses per game compared to just 0.71 for Fornals. As well as this, Bowen takes some corners and indirect freekicks which Fornals does not which increases his assist potential above that of his Spanish teammate. In comparison to other midfielders, Bowen is the fourth-highest scoring midfielder so far this season, again despite having one of the more difficult runs of fixtures to start the season. This is partly due to having 3 big chances so far this season, the second most out of these midfielders, only behind Jorginho who has four due to taking penalties at Chelsea. With all of these factors, Bowen could be a good differential with some favourable fixtures to help build on the strong start to the season that the English winger has seen.

The Forward Differential – Callum Wilson – £6.5m, 12.5% owned

The final differential is Callum Wilson. The ownership of Wilson is marginally above 10%, however, the other differential forwards under 10% do not offer as much potential than the English striker and so Wilson has been selected.

Has Callum Wilson been overlooked as an FPL option so far?

Callum Wilson is currently the eighth-most selected forward in Fantasy Premier League, however, is the third-highest scoring behind only Kane and Vardy who are priced at £10.9m and £10.0m respectively. So far this season, Wilson has outscored Calvert-Lewin (56.4% ownership), Patrick Bamford (32.2% ownership) and Danny Ings (17.9% ownership) yet still sees his ownership lower than all these alternatives. One of the reasons for the English strikers strong start to the season is how involved he is for Newcastle when they attack with a goal involvement of 80%, which is the highest in the league for any player with over one attacking return. One of the reasons that Wilson has such a high involvement is due to taking penalties for Newcastle of which the Englishman has scored three so far this season. This has also contributed to Wilson having the second most big chances out of any player in the league so far this season behind only Jamie Vardy with 10 compared to 9 of Callum Wilson.

Goal Involvement Percentage

The upcoming fixtures for Wilson are also favourable enough for him to potentially continue on his strong run of form that he has started this season with. These fixtures over the next five Gameweeks include Southampton, Crystal Palace and Aston Villa away with home fixtures against West Brom and Chelsea. These matches offer good potential for Newcastle to score in and with the high goal involvement that Wilson has seen, having scored six of Newcastle’s 10 goals so far this season and assisted two, there is potential for these attacking returns to continue.
