<p>Brazilian attacking midfielder Gustavo Scarpa was Nottingham Forest&#8217;s 23rd signing of the season &#8211; but what are his FPL and wider fantasy football prospects?</p>
<p>There is already a <a href="https://www.nottinghampost.com/sport/football/football-news/insane-nottingham-forest-fans-saying-7995628">buzz</a>  around the 29 year old at the City Ground, with fans treated to a 19 minute cameo in Forest&#8217;s win over Southampton on January 4.</p>
<p>But is the Forest fans&#8217; excitement justified? We take a look at his history, what&#8217;s been said about him and some key statistics.</p>

<h2>Gustavo Scarpa: The history</h2>
<p>Forest signed Scarpa from Brazilian Serie A side Palmeiras, however it was at Fluminense that he made his senior debut in 2012.</p>
<p>He initially struggled to nail down a regular place in the team, so was sent on a five-month loan to Red Bull Brasil in the Brazilian lower leagues, where he got plenty of minutes under his belt.</p>
<p>He returned to Fluminense in May 2015 and by the end of the year had established himself as a first-team player, scoring his first Serie A goal two months after his reintroduction to the club.</p>
<p>Among his teammates was Richarlison, now at Tottenham Hotspur.</p>
<p>The pair&#8217;s 2017s were vastly different. While Richarlison secured a move to the Premier League with Watford, Scarpa became embroiled in a contractual dispute which, at his request and with help from the courts, saw his Fluminense deal terminated.</p>
<p>Despite Richarlison getting his big move, it was reportedly Scarpa who was more highly rated.</p>
<p>South American football expert Tim Vickery told talkSPORT:</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;If you stopped 100 Fluminense fans on the street and asked ‘which is going to the big star?’, 99 of them would have said Gustavo Scarpa.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>Scarpa went on to sign for Palmeiras, where he became something of a club legend. He won a number of titles, notably two Brazilian league crowns and a brace of Copa Libertadores trophies.</p>
<p>He won the Serie A Golden Ball award for the best player in 2022, with a number of league-leading statistics.</p>
<p>Domestic success did not translate into international caps though, with Scarpa appearing just once for his national team, back in 2017.</p>
<p>But Forest had seen more than enough and a deal was announced back in the summer, ahead of him completing the move in the January transfer window.</p>

<h2>Gustavo Scarpa: What has been said about the new Forest signing?</h2>
<p>Where better to start with Scarpa&#8217;s own words?</p>
<p>Reflecting on his &#8216;dream&#8217; transfer, he told Forest&#8217;s club <a href="https://www.nottinghamforest.co.uk/news/2022/december/04/reds-sign-gustavo-scarpa/">website</a>:</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a new challenge and I can&#8217;t wait for it to begin. It&#8217;s always been an ambition since I was a little kid to play in Europe, and my dream is to play in the Premier League.</p>
<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m a technical player but also I&#8217;ve developed my game defensively over the past couple of seasons. I&#8217;m very dedicated, hard-working and I&#8217;m excited to get started now.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>Manager Steve Cooper liked what he saw from the off &#8211; enough to give Scarpa his full debut against the Saints on January 4. Cooper <a href="https://www.nottinghampost.com/sport/football/transfer-news/nottingham-forest-gustavo-scarpa-cooper-7990709">said</a>:</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;First impressions are really positive, certainly as a professional and as a person. He&#8217;s really, really engaged with everything around the club and the city.</p>
<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve got to say he&#8217;s a very good trainer. He&#8217;s one that you have to monitor after training, because he just wants to do so much more. He loves football and has spent a lot of time learning about the way we want to play.</p></blockquote>
<p>That first glimpse of Scarpa offered an insight into what could be coming in the second half of the Premier League season.</p>
<p>A curling diagonal ball, posted on <a href="https://twitter.com/jonners/status/1610785246546477057">Twitter</a>, was a first look at the &#8216;wand of a left foot&#8217; Vickery noted in his talkSport interview.</p>
<p>Offering a note of caution as well as praise for the Brazilian, Vickery said:</p>
<blockquote><p>“He’s an attacking midfielder. He is not particularly well-built. But he has a lovely left foot &#8211; a wand of a left foot.</p>
<p>&#8220;He’s going to struggle with the physicality. But that left foot, from set-pieces, terrific.&#8221;</p></blockquote>

<h2>Gustavo Scarpa FPL, Sky, Dream Team and TFF prospects</h2>
<p>Scarpa scored 16 and assisted 25 in 111 games for Fluminense, adding 37 goals and 51 assists over 211 appearances at Palmeiras.</p>
<p>He found the back of the net seven times and assisted 12 in his award-winning 2022 league campaign.</p>
<p>Topping the charts for assists, his figures of 3.3 shots, 3.3 key passes and 2.8 crosses per game were all league leading according to <a href="https://www.whoscored.com/Players/149738/Show/Gustavo-Scarpa">WhoScored</a>.</p>
<p>Scarpa carried on assisting as soon as he pulled on a red shirt, recording two in Forest friendlies during the World Cup break.</p>
<p>His shots figures may attract the interest of Sky Sports Fantasy Football managers, who get bonus points for two and three shots on target per game.</p>
<p>It should however be noted that the majority of his efforts on goal (2.3 per game) came from outside the box, with an average of 1.1 on target.</p>
<p>Scarpa recorded 0.5 tackles per game in 2022, so there might not be the bonus appeal for Telegraph managers.</p>
<p>But a very healthy average WhoScored rating of 7.37, if replicated in the Premier League, could see the midfielder earn a few extra points in Sun Dream Team.</p>
<h3>Forest fixtures</h3>
<p>Forest rank midtable for fixtures from now until FPL Gameweek 25 and with Scarpa awaiting his first start, it may be advisable to wait before investing in the £5.0m midfielder.</p>
<p>At his price, he is one to keep an eye on, particularly if he grabs a share of set pieces and that left foot lives up to its billing.</p>
<p>His new club could do with an injection of creativity, ranking bottom of the league for successful crosses (19%) and final-third passes (60%).</p>
<p>Forest have created 17 big chances, ahead of only Wolves, Bournemouth and West Ham.</p>
<p>All this adds up to a second-lowest expected goals (xG) figure of 18.51 and 13 goals in total.</p>
