Liverpool stats and best players

Liverpool secured a third placed finish in their last season under Jurgen Klopp, scoring 86 goals and conceding 41 along the way, ranking the Reds third for both of those stats too.

They underperformed their Expected Goals (xG) of 90.73, due in part to a lack of clinical finishing from the likes of Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz.

This was the inverse of their defensive performance, where Liverpool overperformed their xGC, although they were still placed third in the league for this statistic.

Virgil Van Dijk was a mainstay once again in upholding this record, although the Dutchman had a variety of centre-back partners along the way.

The Reds' season was reflected in their fantasy performance, with Liverpool sitting 3rd in the league for FPL points.

Mohamed Salah once again topped the scoring charts for Liverpool, with an impressive 30 attacking returns in just 28 Premier League starts.

This comprised 18 goals and 12 assists, and Salah was one of just three Liverpool players to hit double figures for league goals, with Nunez scoring 11 while Diogo Jota managed 10.

Despite limited game time, the Egyptian had more assists (12) than any of his teammates too, although Darwin Nunez (11) was close behind.

It was a quiet season on the assist front for Trent Alexander-Arnold based on his usual standards, but with just 25 starts due to injury issues, his three goals and four assists were still respectable for a defender.

Alexander-Arnold was one of several key Liverpool assets to miss a significant number of league games last season, along with Alisson BeckerMohamed Salah, Diogo Jota, Darwin Nunez, and Andy Robertson.

Robertson in particular only managed 18 starts, which makes his five attacking returns look less meagre. The position of the Scotsman is one to keep an eye on under Slot.

This array of injuries led to increased opportunities for youngsters, such as Conor Bradley at right-back.

The Northern Ireland international certainly made the most of his minutes, grabbing three assists and a goal in his 10 starts.

On the topic of making the most of your minutes, Diogo Jota's 10 goals and three assists also came in just 14 starts, with his limited action a result of both injuries and competition for places.

This competition includes Cody Gakpo, the international compatriot of new manager Arne Slot, with the Dutchman contributing eight goals and five assists in the league.

Defensively, there was plenty of criticism levelled at Liverpool last season, and this is a more obvious area of improvement than in attack, given that Jurgen Klopp's side had the best xG in the league.

Despite shipping the first goal on far too many occasions for Klopp's liking however, only Manchester City, Arsenal and Everton kept more clean sheets than the Reds - so there is a foundation of solidity for Slot to build upon.

What will Liverpool's style of play be like under Arne Slot?

Arne Slot is more of a possession based manager than Jurgen Klopp, and there may be greater involvement for Liverpool's midfield players as a result of this.

Dominik Szoboszlai was the first notable beneficiary of this shift, scoring the first Liverpool goal under Slot in their opening pre-season game.

You can also expect to see the Reds' fullbacks invert into midfield at times, with the attacking players expected to provide the width on these occasions.

This could be a slight negative for Salah who may find himself stuck out wide in a more creative role against certain opponents, but there will surely be constant interchanging of positions regardless.

On paper the Reds will set up in a 4-3-3, as they did under Klopp, but Slot's preference to build from the back and through midfield will likely mean a change from the frequency of 'high risk' passes we're used to seeing from Liverpool.

It will certainly mean a more patient approach, with an emphasis placed on playing out from the back, so the passing ability of Van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold will remain integral to the success of the system.

But it may also allow for less direct attacking play, and therefore less opportunities for the likes of Luis Diaz to break on the counter attack.

While there are clear first choice options in defence for Liverpool, pre-season will give us a better idea of which Liverpool midfielders and attackers are likely to be favoured by Slot.
