In this team preview series, Dan previews all 20 Premier League teams ahead of the 2021/22 season. This includes season expectations, expected lineups, best player picks, under the radar gems, and players to avoid.

<h2>Newcastle 2020/21 Season Overview</h2>
<a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/the-best-newcastle-fpl-players/">Newcastle United</a> ended the season impressively to finish 12th. That would certainly have been accepted at the start of the season, although the difference between them and <a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/the-best-brighton-fpl-players/">Brighton </a>in 16th was only four points. This gap was six points closer than <a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/the-best-aston-villa-fpl-players/">Aston Villa</a> in 11th.
The Magpies only managed seven clean sheets, and conceded 1.63 goals per game. This record only surpassed four teams and was representative of their xGC record.
Attacking wise, Newcastle scored 1.21 per game, almost identical to their xG per game record of 1.22.
Their last eight games was the best spell of the season, winning five and scoring only one less (16) than <a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/premier-league-fantasy-football-liverpool-best-player-picks/">Liverpool</a>, <a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/the-best-spurs-fpl-players/">Tottenham </a>and <a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/premier-league-fantasy-football-manchester-city-best-player-picks/">Mancester City</a> who scored the most.
Remarkably, most of those games were without talisman Callum Wilson; the striker only started twice.
The Toon also had loanee <a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/the-best-arsenal-fpl-players/">Joe Willock</a> to thank. Willock scored seven in that time, despite only starting four times and featuring on seven occasions.
During this run of eight games, Newcastle totalled the <a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/opta/">third best xG </a>in the division.
Steve Bruce&#8217;s side also had the fourth most big chances, so it&#8217;s fair to say their new wing-back system was effective. Before it was deployed, they had the third worst big chance tally and the fifth worst xG record.
Defensively, things didn&#8217;t change too dramatically in that period despite their good run, and their xGC per game in the period was actually higher than in the rest of the season.

<h2>Newcastle 2021/22 Season Expectations</h2>
Newcastle&#8217;s primary aim next season will be to beat the drop, and it&#8217;s unreasonable to hope for much more with a lack of investment.
They should avoid relegation, but I expect the margins to be tighter than they were last season.

<a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/who-are-the-best-fpl-budget-goalkeepers/">Martin Dubravka</a> will start when fit, but is unlikely to be available for the start of the season.
Federico Fernandez and Jamaal Lascelles are certain starters in the back three. Fabian Schar is the most likely to claim the most dubious spot in the line-up ahead of Paul Dummett, Emil Krafth and Ciaran Clark.
Matt Ritchie and Jacob Murphy will take the wing-back spots, with Isaac Hayden set to return to the team after a long injury lay-off. Like Dubravka, Jonjo Shelvey is struggling with an injury but will start over Sean Longstaff when fit.
Miguel Almirón should be prefered to Ryan Fraser, but that also remains unclear.
<a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/who-are-the-best-fpl-mid-priced-forwards/">Callum Wilson</a> will be supported by Allan Saint-Maximin up front.

<h2>Newcastle Best Fantasy Football Players</h2>
<h3>Callum Wilson </h3>
Newcastle&#8217;s top scorer last season, scoring 12 and assisting a further six. That tally came at a rate that only four forwards in the league could beat, and only four forwards scored at a more frequent rate.
Wilson&#8217;s non-penalty xG per 90 minutes was actually beaten by over 20 players, but Wilson takes <a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/premier-league-set-piece-takers/">penalties</a> so that statistic isn&#8217;t too concerning.
His goal involvement tally (per 90) without penalties was actually beaten by eight forwards, so it&#8217;s fair to say penalties boosted his numbers quite considerably last season.
There&#8217;s not much to suggest that won&#8217;t continue, given the trickery of Saint-Maximin and Almirón in particular.
When Wilson started, he had by far the best goal involvement percentage. He was involved in 62% of Newcastle&#8217;s goals.
The 29-year-old had the seventh most big chances per start, with 0.87. In comparison, <a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/premier-league-fantasy-football-leicester-city-best-player-tips/">Jamie Vardy</a> had the most of all players, with 1.03.
Wilson only played less than 85 minutes twice when starting, and they were both due to injuries. For a player with an impressive goal frequency, that is a very good asset to have.
He isn&#8217;t the safest player to have from a fitness perspective; Wilson had to deal with four injuries last season (missing 12 games) due to a reoccurring hamstring injury.

<h2>Newcastle Under the Radar Fantasy Football Players</h2>
<h3>Jacob Murphy </h3>
He seems to have made the right-wingback spot his own after a good run of form at the end of last season.
Murphy will get a good share of the right-footed <a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/premier-league-set-piece-takers/">set-pieces</a> whilst Shelvey is out, and showed some Fantasy promise when he took his new role.
In the last nine gameweeks, he scored and assisted once in Bruce&#8217;s new system. Yet Murphy was unlucky to not get more given his xA record was almost double that of his normal record.
During this period, he also created the most big chances per game in the Newcastle squad (0.33), had the highest xA per game (0.20), the joint second most shots in the box (0.78), and the third best expected goal involvement percentage (0.17).

<h3>Matt Ritchie </h3>
Offers similar goal threat to Murphy, but should be classified as a defender in most Fantasy games. That makes his upside far higher given the potential clean sheet points.
Like Murphy, he will take a lot of <a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/premier-league-set-piece-takers/">set-pieces</a> (although he is actually the first choice left-footed taker). He also is the back-up penalty taker to Wilson.
In the final nine weeks, Ritchie made the second most key passes per game in the Magpies squad (1.33).
He set-up the joint most big chances (0.33), and had by far the best assist tally, with 0.56 per game. This included five assists in the last nine matches, no Premier League defender recorded more assists during this period.
In the official <a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/fantasy-premier-league-ultimate-guide/">FPL</a> game, Ritchie averaged the most points per game within the Newcastle ranks (4.33). That was over half a point per game more than anyone else, although he was quite fortunate.
After all, he only had an <a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/predictions/">expected points</a> total per game of 3.0 which was the eighth best.

<h2>Newcastle Players to Avoid:</h2>
<h3><a href="https://cms.fantasyfootballhub.co.uk/who-are-the-best-fpl-mid-priced-midfielders/">Allan Saint-Maximin</a></h3>
Not a prolific enough goal scorer to be a viable option, particularly given his re-classification of a forward.
He only managed 1.20 shots, 0.60 shots in the box and 0.12 goals per game. Those metrics all ranked fourth in the Newcastle squad.
That being said, he had the second best goal involvement percentage in the squad per game (0.22). However, that was only 0.02 and 0.03 more than Murphy and Ritchie respectively.
Saint-Maximin only created the third most key passes and big chances per game. For a player that has scored only three goals in his previous two seasons, he just isn&#8217;t an inspiring option.

<h3>Miguel Almirón </h3>
Registered worse underlying numbers than Saint-Maximin and isn&#8217;t completely nailed, with Ryan Fraser impressing in pre-season.
