Tottenham 2021/22 Season Expectations

After a fantastic start to last season, Tottenham underwent a mid-season crisis, dropping from first place after twelve games to missing out on Europa League, finishing seventh.

After the first twelve games, Spurs would have finished tenth, winning as many games as they lost. They only kept four clean sheets away from home, and their away form would’ve seen them finish 11th.

Undoubtedly, should Spurs lose Harry Kane that would really damage them. As we’ve seen with the likes of Gareth Bale, Luka Modric and Christian Eriksen; Spurs have failed to replace their key players.

Top four will be the aim, but it does seem rather ambitious given the current state of affairs. As we’ve seen from Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool in recent seasons, one signing can turn things around; and Tottenham will hope to recreate that with the signing of a much needed centre back.

As a Tottenham fan, I think the arrival of Nuno is a promising one. He guided Wolves from mid-table in the Championship to fighting for Champions League football; and that was only in the space of a couple of seasons.

It’s still a bit early to predict Spurs’ season, but heavy investment is needed to secure top four, as well as the retainment of talisman Kane. I think a Europa League spot seems a realistic prediction right now.

How To Play Fantasy Premier League 2021/22 | The Beginner’s Guide

Tottenham Expected lineup:

Nuno’s arrival makes Tottenham’s line-up arguably the most dubious in the league. It is rumoured that he wants to play with two up top, but given the uncertainty surrounding Harry Kane, it seems quite unlikely he’ll line-up that way at the start of the season.

Captain Hugo Lloris will start between the sticks, with rumoured incomer Christian Romero likely to partner Joe Rodon in central defence. Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez will challenge Rodon’s spot.

I think Serge Aurier will be slightly above Matt Doherty in the pecking order, but Spurs are targetting are right-back. Sergio Reguilon is almost certain to start at left-back.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is a certain starter in the midfield, and will be partnered by at least one of Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani Lo Celso and Oliver Skipp. If Nuno decides to play with two eights, Lo Celso will make the side ahead of Dele.

With Kane unlikely to start the season, Son Heung-Min will have to play as a centre forward. That leaves two wide positions free, which will most likely be taken by Lucas Moura and Steven Bergwijn.

Tottenham Best Players:

Son Heung-Min‘s Fantasy credentials will be heavily dependent on whether Kane stays in my opinion. Many Fantasy managers in the past have debated over whether Son is a better asset with Kane in or out of the team but for me the answer is clear and simple, the pairing in unmatched and they both get the best out of one another.

14 of Son’s 27 goal involvements last season involved Kane last season, and Kane assisted nine of Son’s 17 Premier League goals. Son was one of the most clinical players in the league, ranking fourth for goals per shot, with 0.24. That was only beaten by Joe Willock, Gareth Bale and Edinson Cavani.

He also exceeded his expected goal tally the most in the whole division, scoring 17 from an expected goal tally of 10.4. I see that as a result of his ability rather than luck, and can’t see that changing. Son also took set-pieces last season, and on a plus side, will take penalties should Kane leave.

Tottenham Under the Radar Players:

Sergio Reguilon looks a fine option should Tottenham line-up with the wing-back system. He managed four assists in 27 Premier League appearances last season. Interestingly, he has scored twelve professional goals, with half of those coming when playing as a wing-back.

To put it into context, he has only played 17% of his career as a wing-back, so it’s fair to say he’s quite accomplished in that position. Only four teams kept more clean sheets than Spurs last season, and this season strengthening in defence is a certainty.

Lucas Moura is likely to start at the beginning of the season. He scored only three and assisted five last season, but averaged the second most shots in the box (0.83) and created the fourth most big chances (0.19) per 90 out of players in my expected line-up. I still think there are better options from other teams, but Lucas will have to play a bigger role should Kane leave, and Nuno’s focus on pacey wingers makes him a decent option.

Fantasy Premier League 2021/22 Tips – Team Previews and Best Players

Tottenham Players to Avoid:

I would avoid all defenders except Reguilon for now, seeing as we have no idea who Nuno fancies.

As well as that, I’d avoid Steven Bergwijn, who isn’t certain to start.
