The season has kicked-off which while fantastic in many ways also seemed strange playing in the middle of a heatwave.
While watching Crystal Palace v Arsenal it was unusual seeing Cheick Doucoure (£7.2m) having cramp so early in the game, which I assume was due to being a new signing and not use to the pace of the Premier League.
As the weekend progressed, I saw more players having cramp, which may have been as a result of having so little pre-season. It&#8217;s possible this may lead to more injuries than usual.
I’m a big believer of not being too afraid of the monsters hiding under the bed but accept they will sometimes come out and bite you.
I just didn’t realise how scary they could be until I walked through the turnstiles at Selhurst Park with no Gabriel Jesus (£9.5m) in my FPL or Sky teams.

For Sky, that match being a single match day and most people having him as captain, my season had the potential to be ruined if he banged in a hat-trick.
Luckily for me he blanked and I could sleep easy.
<h2>Sky team of the week</h2>
The top score in Sky for Gameweek 1 was 152 points (which may have be aided with a few transfers).
My team of the week would have scored 180 points and comprised of the following players:

The bonus points achieved by each team this week was as follows:

Manchester City took their usual place in leading the way in collecting bonus points by picking up six bonus awards in passing.
Liverpool, who usually also score well in passing and on a par to City, were well down on the list after the first week.
The distribution of the bonus-points was as below:

A total of 38% of awards come from passing, 31% tackling, 20% shooting and 11% from saves.

It&#8217;s too early to draw any conclusions, but Joachim Andersen (£7.9m) of Palace looks very good.
Last season, Palace changed to a possession style of football, so passing bonuses are likely to come his way often.
Also, he is likely to get a few assists this season with his accurate long balls and going up for set-pieces and flicking the ball on.

I don’t worry about how my team scored in the first few gameweeks, as there is just so my variance and luck.
For transparency, I was on the right side of variance with 113 points (no transfers) and just creeping into the top 1k at 967th.
My main concern is to check that my players started and who may be injured.
I think my biggest risk going into the first gameweek was Nathan Ake (£8.0m) and I was delighted to see him start and perform well.
My other concern was Taiwo Awoniyi (£7.0m) who came on as a sub. I expect he will stay in my side and is somebody to keep a close eye on.
Another player who I need to monitor is Thiago Silva (£9.2m), as I’m not sure if he picked up an injury on Saturday or if it was just cramp.
I’ve updated my models to take into account the weekend action and predicted scores from <a href="https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/soccer-predictions/premier-league/">538</a>.
Using this with my linear programming model (optimising points based on projections) increases my expected points until the World Cup from 1,257 to 1,268, a benefit of 11 points though using six transfers instead of five.
One constraint in my model is a transfer must increase my score by eight points, which has been met.

Obviously, there is another monster under the bed called  Erling Haaland (£11.5m) but I’m less frightened this week as he’s the captain in my second team.
