Former Sky Sports Fantasy Football champion Dan Cox brings us his weekly digest, giving us the highs and lows of his season, rounding up the bonus point beneficiaries, Man of the Match magnets and everything else you need to have a successful fantasy campaign.

You can’t beat the feeling pre-season. The hopes, the optimism, the excitement. Then you're almost 60 minutes into the lunchtime kick off. Your captain (Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang) hasn’t done anything except earn a soft yellow card and you're already regretting your captaincy selection. Thankfully he scored and it wasn’t looking too bad only for Mohamed Salah to score a hat trick and totally ruin your first day; well unless you opted for the Egyptian and even better if he was your captain.

I briefly looked at Salah. It made sense. He looked the best captain pick of the day. However for me, with games against Arsenal and Chelsea after that and Spurs, Arsenal ad Chelsea having the better fixtures overall pre-overhaul I just felt there were better options. My only hope now is that Salah has a quiet couple of games to allow my other strikers to catch him up. Don’t get me wrong it’s a nightmare not owning a player that scores a hat trick first day, I had it last season with Raheem Sterling who bagged three against West Ham on opening day but you have to have faith in the plan you made. Things like this always make you think that you’ve made a huge error and may even cause you to think of making some drastic changes to chase points but it’s a marathon not a sprint. Relax - we have 37 more rounds of fixtures to come. And on the plus side Salah was only in 22.96% of teams.

That all sounded fine right? Well, repeat that for not having Jamie Vardy on Sunday. Instead I opted for Harry Kane. I don’t like owning Kane; he hasn’t looked fit for about two years. I wouldn’t have picked him if it wasn’t for the games I felt I needed him for captaincy-wise. If he doesn’t score against Southampton this weekend I may bite the bullet and swap him out for a Manchester City player on Monday instead of the planned Aubameyang move. Vardy was only in 16.04% of teams so again it’s not a total disaster. However if you’ve started well and had both that’s great and you need to take advantage of your great start.

Monday was average, nothing special, an assist for Timo Werner, my captain. I was hoping for a rise up the leaderboard as he was only in 27.17% of teams and 16.2% owned Pulisic who wasn’t even in the squad but it wasn’t to be. I closed out the Gameweek in 81,499th on 68 points. Still, this should mean a rise (hopefully) each week until December.
