The Best Manchester United FPL Players 2021/22 | Manchester United in Brief
Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s side also narrowly missed out on Europa League glory, losing on penalties to Villareal.
The Red Devils won and lost two games respectively in their last five league games.
Over the course of the campaign, they won 21, drew 11 and lost six matches. This was the joint lowest number of defeats across all teams in the division.
They recorded an expected goals (xG) figure of 71.02. Meanwhile their expected goals conceded (xGC) was 48.75 so there wasn’t a significant overperformance in either department.
In terms of FPL points, United produced 1,814. Only two teams fared better, one being Premier League champions Manchester City. The other? Champions League victors Chelsea.
United have been busy in this summer transfer window, agreeing a deal for English star Jadon Sancho. By the looks of things they’re not done yet, so expect to see more high-profile signings arriving at Old Trafford.
The Best Manchester United FPL Players 2021/22 | Bruno Fernandes (MID – £12.0m)
It comes as no surprise that the highest FPL points scorer (244) of last season makes this list. Yet Bruno Fernandes’ dip in form in the latter part of the campaign raises some key questions about the Portuguese playmaker.
From Gameweek 1 to 27, Bruno topped the vast majority of crucial underlying statistics. The Manchester United talisman was third for overall shots (86), joint top for shots on target (37) and fourth highest for xG (13.76).
As mentioned in the Chelsea best FPL players article, Fernandes made the most key passes across the whole season. This was no different in Gameweek 27, by this point Bruno had made 77.
He was also joint top for big chances created (17), first for expected assists (10.95), joint second for goals (16) and joint second for assists (12).
Although Kane finished the season with the most bonus points, Fernandes had the most from Gameweek 1 to 27 (32).
For the remainder of the season, this was a completely different story. In 10 appearances, Fernandes only scored three goals and recorded two assists.
The last 11 Gameweeks saw Fernandes with the 31st highest amount of FPL points. He was nowhere to be seen in every metric discussed during this period.
Having said that, do not put it past the FPL maestro to turn things around. Bruno is difficult to fit into our teams along with other premiums such as Mohammed Salah (£12.5m), but he is always a great captaincy option.
It’s worth noting that Fernandes netted 17 points last season against United’s opening two opponents!
The Best Manchester United FPL Players 2021/22 | Luke Shaw (DEF – £5.5m)
Shaw scored once and assisted five across the whole season, reaching triple digits in FPL points for the first time since the 2013/14 season.
He also set a new personal best with 124 FPL points, beating his previous record by the solitary figure.
United kept 13 clean sheets last season, with Shaw featuring in 10 of them.
No one would have anticipated how crucial the Englishman would become when they signed Alex Telles (£5.0m) following a 6-1 home defeat to Spurs.
The 26-year-old carried his fine form into Euro 2020, scoring in the final and amassing three assists in the knockout stages.
However, it has been revealed that Shaw suffered an injury against Germany and is a doubt for the beginning of next season.
The left back played with broken ribs throughout the rest of the tournament, so his 46% ownership will inevitably drop when more FPL managers become aware of his situation.
Another downside is he picked up eight yellow cards, with 26 in his last three seasons. A suspension is possibly on of the cards.
Despite several drawbacks, Shaw finished with the joint fourth highest FPL points at United (124).
He created seven big chances which was only bettered by Fernandes, this was also the case for key passes (72).
Only Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) created more chances amongst defenders. Shaw made 72 opportunities but his record per 90 minutes (2.4) narrowly edged Trent’s (2.3).
United rank second for the first six Gameweeks according to our tried and tested fixture ticker. If Shaw is available, he’s undoubtedly a viable option.
The Best Manchester United FPL Players 2021/22 | Aaron Wan Bissaka (DEF – £5.5m)
Although Harry Maguire (£5.5m) offers more goal threat, I’d argue Aaron Wan Bissaka is also worth our consideration.
His attacking involvement improved significantly last season, nearly doubling his previous goal involvement with seven attacking contributions.
Shaw’s xA (5.56) was over double Wan Bissaka’s (£5.5m) yet they both created five assists, with one goal separating the full backs in Wan Bissaka’s favour.
With left-sided set pieces in Shaw‘s repertoire and higher assist potential from open play, you would expect him to get more attacking returns than Wan Bissaka this time round.
Nevertheless, what makes Wan Bissaka stand out is his reliability and consistency. He played 3,060 minutes across the whole campaign, only Fernandes had more in the United squad.
Unlike Shaw, Wan Bissaka never came off the bench for those one point cameos we all dread as FPL managers.
He only received three yellow cards, which is five less than Shaw and almost a quarter of Maguire’s total.
Wan Bissaka also has no competition at right back, so he should continue to start almost every league game.
All of these small details resulted in Wan Bissaka being the third highest FPL points scorer at the club (144).
United only kept six clean sheets at home last season, and one in their last nine Premier League games. Yet Wan Bissaka featured in all 13 games in which the Red Devils didn’t concede.
In the second half of last season, Wan Bissaka was the fourth highest scoring FPL defender with 81 points. Only Trent, Lewis Dunk (£5.0m) and César Azpilicueta (£6.0m) outscored him from Gameweek 20 to 38.
At 11.6% ownership, Wan Bissaka is going slightly under the radar. Yet the “spider” could well be on his way for triple digits in FPL points for the fourth consecutive season.
