The Best West Ham FPL Players 2021/22 | West Ham in Brief
West Ham were just two points away from a Champions League spot last season, finishing sixth in a hugely successful campaign.
After David Moyes guided them to Premier League safety at the end of the 2019/20 season, the Hammers found themselves in fifth place in November of last year and held on to a European spot for the remainder of the season.
This wasn’t just down to good fortune. West Ham had the fifth-highest xG last season, and an xGA in the top 10 too.
Powered by two of the most productive full-backs in the league, Aaron Cresswell (£5.5m) and Vladimir Coufal (£5.0m), West Ham proved very difficult to beat.
Their decision to sign Jesse Lingard (£7.0m) on loan proved to be an inspired one, and regular attacking contributions from the likes of Tomas Soucek (£6.0m) and Michail Antonio (£7.5m) ensured they were never goal-shy either.
As they look to build upon a breakthrough Premier League finish, we look at the best West Ham FPL players for the 2021/22 season.
The Best West Ham FPL Players | Vladimír Coufal (DEF – £5.0m)
As plenty of FPL managers clamour to get Cresswell in their Gameweek 1 teams, Vladimír Coufal is being criminally overlooked.
At £0.5m less, he still managed nine assists last season. That makes him the most creative defender priced at £5.0m or less.
If Coufal was in any other side that finished top six last season, it’s likely he would be a shoo-in for most FPL managers. The fact he shares a pitch with Cresswell is both a blessing and a curse for the Czech – it’s his English colleague who has the higher FPL ownership as I write.
But as a debutant in the Premier League, one might argue that Coufal’s prospects are more enticing than Cresswell’s. Cresswell failed to registered a single assist in 2,727 minutes in the 2019/20 season. The most he’s ever managed is seven assists in a single campaign, but that was back in 17/18.
Coufal, meanwhile, could yet improve. His fantastic showing at Euro 2020 has only enforced the idea that West Ham have a real talent on their hands here.
The Best West Ham FPL Players | Aaron Cresswell (DEF – £5.5m)
Listen, just because I rate Coufal, it doesn’t mean I can’t rate Aaron Cresswell too.
The Hammers full-back registered 11 assists last season, totalling 153 FPL points. He was the third-highest scoring defender in the league, behind only the Liverpool full-back duo.
By extension, that makes him the highest scoring £5.5m FPL defender by some margin. In fact, it makes him the highest scoring £6.5m defender too.
It’d be rude not to include him here, and it’s little wonder he gets a mention in our best mid-priced FPL defenders article too.
One thing that helps Cresswell massively is his set piece involvement. According to our set piece table, he’s on left-sided corners and many of West Ham’s direct and indirect free-kicks.
In a team that scored the joint-most headers in the league last season (15), this is a huge asset for the Englishman.
The big question for FPL managers is also a simple one: can West Ham and Cresswell continue their incredible form into the 2021/22 season? If they do, Cresswell will surely be one of the biggest beneficiaries.
The Best West Ham FPL Players | Jarrod Bowen (MID – £6.5m)
Jarrod Bowen scored 141 FPL points last season. This stat – though his most obvious – is still surprising to many FPL managers. The West Ham playmaker was barely considered by most.
It makes him the second-highest scoring £6.5m midfielder behind James Ward-Prowse.
That’s impressive for a player who only managed 2556 minutes. In fact, of all FPL midfielders priced under £9.0m to play over 2,500 minutes, only Leeds‘ Jack Harrison (£6.0m) managed a better points-per-90 than Bowen.
Bowen’s 2020/21 season was a tale of short bursts of brilliance, followed by long stagnant periods. Three of his eight goals were scored in a run of three fixtures, whilst another three were scored in a pair of neighbouring games.
That’s not exactly great for an FPL asset, but Bowen also chipped in with six assists: a decent tally for a £6.5m midfielder.
As he begins to integrate into West Ham’s starting eleven more and more, Bowen has also been given more set piece responsibility. If he can find some attacking consistency through increased minutes and more set piece involvement, he could be a force to be reckoned with.
