<h2>Chelsea&#8217;s Gameweek 10 Injuries &#8211; What to do With Chelsea Defenders</h2>
<ul>
<li><strong>Cesar Azpilicueta (£6.2m)</strong></li>
<li><strong>Andreas Christensen (£5.1m)</strong></li>
</ul>
<p>Now, both have trained today (Thursday) and <strong>Thomas Tuchel</strong> has made them available for selection against <strong>Newcastle</strong>. However, shoulder problems (Azpilicueta) can be quite serious and frustrating, and Christensen&#8217;s tooth issue could also have reoccurrences. So I wouldn&#8217;t be surprised to see at least one benched.</p>
<p>Here are the likely scenarios of Chelsea&#8217;s back line:</p>
<p>Certainties:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Ben Chilwell (£5.8m)</strong> at left-back. It&#8217;s highly likely he starts following his benching against <strong>Southampton</strong> midweek.</li>
<li>The left centre-back spot will probably be taken up by <strong>Antonio Rudiger (£5.8m).</strong> Chelsea don&#8217;t have a plethora of options there (unlike in other positions), and he&#8217;s certainly the best man to occupy that role. Further, he was rested against Southampton.</li>
</ul>
<p>Variances:</p>
<ul>
<li>Option 1 &#8211; Christensen as the central centre-back, Azpilicueta at right centre-back and <strong>Reece James (£5.6m)</strong> at right wing-back.</li>
<li>Option 2 &#8211; The same as above but <strong>Thiago Silva (£5.5m)</strong> instead of Christensen.</li>
<li>Option 3 &#8211; Silva CB, Christensen RCB, James RWB.</li>
<li>Option 4 &#8211; Silva CB, Christensen RCB, Azpilicueta RWB.</li>
</ul>
<p>Option 2 is what I believe Tuchel will go with. He&#8217;s always been a big advocate of having his captain on the pitch, and against a low block Reece James will be very useful for creative and attacking purposes. James has accumulated an xGI of 1.8 in just 278 minutes, better than any other defender as a ratio.</p>

<h2>Replacements &#8211; What to do With Chelsea Defenders</h2>
<p>However, if the benching risk and fixture swing in a few weeks isn&#8217;t appealing for you, here are some potential replacements for both assets (ranked in order):</p>
<h3></h3>
<h3><strong>Azpilicueta Replacements</strong></h3>
<p><strong>1. Ben Chilwell (£5.8m)</strong> &#8211; This is very simple. Yes it&#8217;s a sideways move, but one with huge upside. He&#8217;s got <strong>three goals in his last three games</strong> in the league and looks well placed to consistently retain his starting place in the league with fantastic performances. He&#8217;s had 7 shots, with 6 being inside the box in the last three gameweeks. From a tactical perspective, it looks like Tuchel prefers his left sided Wing Back to be more advanced of the two and occupy quite central areas. Areas which you are far more likely to get attacking returns from.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>2. Joao Cancelo (£6.4m) </strong>&#8211; He&#8217;s absolutely fantastic. I will give you statistics shortly, but his involvement in City&#8217;s build ups, his advanced positioning, volume of crosses and getting on the end of diagonals into the box make him a fantastic asset. He ranks second for attacking statistics based on xGI, which I think is a very useful tool when used in the correct context. He&#8217;s accumulated 2.7 xGI, o.6 greater than the man in 3rd and only inferior to <strong>Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.6m)</strong>.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Chelsea and Manchester City have the best defences, so I don&#8217;t see the need to look elsewhere. If you have the money to upgrade Christensen to one of these two, then do that (or if you can find another way which is affordable into these two defences). If not, there&#8217;s multiple budget options but a <strong>Brentford defender</strong>, preferably a wing-back, would be my pick.</p>
