<p>Serbia competed in their first World Cup in 2010, having previously taken part as Serbia and Montenegro and Yugoslavia.</p>
<p>They came into European qualifying among the second seeds for the group-based draw and drew Portugal from pot one.</p>
<p>With one automatic qualifying spot per group up for grabs, the Eagles faced a tough task to reach Qatar.</p>
<p>Also standing in their way was the Republic of Ireland, Luxembourg and Azerbaijan.</p>
<p>Serbia began their group with a 3-2 win over the Republic of Ireland. <strong>Dusan Vlahovic </strong>scored an equalising goal after the Irish had taken the lead, with Fulham's <strong>Aleksandar Mitrovic </strong>adding two second-half goals.</p>
<p>Portugal were up next, and it was Serbia's results against the former European champions that was likely to define their overall performance.</p>
<p>The first match - on Serbia's home turf - ended in a 2-2 draw. Portugal took a 2-0 lead, only for Mitrovic and <strong>Filip Kostic </strong>to put things back on level terms.</p>
<p>Next up was Azerbaijan, with the familiar face of Mitrovic scoring both goals in a 2-1 win.</p>
<p>The Fulham frontman scored his second successive brace in the next match against Luxembourg, followed by an own-goal and a 96th minute goal from <b>Nikola Milenkovic </b>to seal a 4-1 win.</p>
<p>A Milenkovic own-goal cancelled out <b>Sergej Milinkovic-Savic's </b>opener away to the Republic of Ireland, before a 3-1 home defeat of Azerbaijan.</p>
<p>This time, it was the turn of Vlahovic to score a brace, including a penalty. And <strong>Dusan Tadic </strong>converted a second penalty to seal victory.</p>
<p>All this left Portugal and Serbia deadlocked on 17 points apiece, with the Portuguese ahead on goal difference.</p>
<p>Serbia therefore needed a win to book their place in Qatar - and win they did in Lisbon, with Tadic and Mitrovic sealing the deal after going behind after two minutes.</p>
<h2><b>Serbia's form since qualifying for the World Cup 2022</b></h2>
<p>Qualification was sealed in November 2021, and Serbia next took part in two international friendlies in March.</p>
<p>The first was a narrow 1-0 win against Hungary, with an own-goal the difference between the two sides.</p>
<p>A 3-0 defeat to Denmark ended a disappointing pair of fixtures.</p>
<p>June and September brought six UEFA Nations League games, with Norway, Slovenia and Sweden in Serbia's group.</p>
<p>Their slow start to 2022 continued with a 1-0 loss to Norway. Their first win of 2022 came via a 4-1 scoreline against Slovenia, with Mitrovic, Milinkovic-Savic, <strong>Luka Jovic </strong>and <strong>Nemanja Radonjic </strong>the goalscorers.</p>
<p>Jovic scored the only goal of the game as Sweden were beaten by a goal to nil. And June was rounded off with a lively 2-2 draw against Slovenia. <strong>Andrija Zivkovic </strong>and Mitrovic were on the scoresheet.</p>
